🎷 Hill District jazz venue restored
August 17, 2026 · — Laura Tsutsui
Happy Monday friends, I hope you had a great weekend! I spent mine decluttering my closet – identifying what does and does not spark joy – and nothing brings me joy like finding new things at our city’s various pop-up markets and shops.
If you’re looking to shop sustainably, scroll on for some HIGHLY recommended vintage and thrift options in Pittsburgh 🛍️⬇️

What's CITY Talking About

Historic New Granada Theater Is Back
This century-old Hill District jazz venue once hosted greats Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, and Ella Fitzgerald. The Hill Community Development Corp. raised $28 million to complete phase one renovations, which required 80 tons of steel and a restoration of the art deco facade. The project already secured $1 million for phase two to develop a cafe and black-box theater. [🔒 Business Times / WESA]
Finally! Panther Hollow Bridge Is Open
After closing in October 2024 for repairs, drivers can once again zip to the Anderson Playground and Schenley pool via the 130-year-old bridge that sits southeast of Phipps Conservatory. However, the nearby Charles Anderson Bridge, which connects Panther Hollow Road to Boulevard of the Allies, is still under construction through 2028. [City of Pittsburgh]
Leave E-Scooters at Home
The University of Pittsburgh banned e-scooters from being parked or stored anywhere on school property. Pitt says it’s to reduce collisions, address battery fire hazards, and keep walkways accessible. However, many students are unhappy with the new rule. State law does not allow e-scooters on sidewalks or on roads with a speed limit above 25 mph. [University of Pittsburgh / WPXI / USA Today]
Achieving Darkroom Democracy
Analog Liberation, a film photography collective in Millvale, has one important rule: Everyone gets a say in how things are run. The 24/7 darkroom was developed (pun intended) after Pittsburgh Filmmakers folded in 2019. Analog’s founders wanted to empower artists, including amateurs. They intentionally set membership costs to $58 a month, which is equivalent to an eight-hour shift earning PA’s minimum wage. [Pittsburgh City Paper]
- The collective’s first Analog Fest, a celebration of film photography, is Aug. 28-30. The fest will feature hands-on activities, handmade instant film portraits, tintypes, an 8mm film booth, local vendors, and more. Plus, it’s free!
