What's CITY Talking About

PA Measles Outbreak Getting Worse

More than 200 people have gotten sick from measles this year, with 46 cases reported in the last week alone. So far, three cases have been confirmed in Indiana County, right next door to Allegheny County.

Three Mile Island Closer To Reopening

The former nuclear power plant is one step closer to producing power again, after federal officials found there would be "no significant" environmental impact from restarting the reactor. The plant's owner previously signed a 20-year deal to power Microsoft data centers.

  • Emergency preparedness? At a recent public meeting, raised safety concerns and shared memories of the 1979 partial meltdown. FEMA is currently working on an emergency plan. [City Cast Pittsburgh / WITF]

Driving in Pittsburgh IS Stressful

A recent survey ranked our city the ninth most stressful U.S. city to drive in, behind nearby Philly (No. 3) and Columbus (No. 6). More than half of drivers nationwide feel anxious before starting their engines, and 89% even experience physical stress symptoms like jaw clenching. Our permanent construction season and recent road closures probably aren’t helping either. [TribLive]

  • Bathtub remodel: Starting this fall, PennDOT will close lanes on the Parkway East where it runs alongside the Mon Wharf in order to raise the height of existing floodwalls The project could last through early 2028. [TribLive]
  • New pipes: Pittsburgh Water will soon replace lead pipes in Highland Park, Shadyside, Bloomfield, and Lawrenceville. The utility has replaced 27,000 service lines since 2016 and is on track to replace all lead pipes in its service area by next year. [WESA]

Return of The VHS Store

A VHS rental store – yes, you read that right – is coming to Lawrenceville. The stock at Lost Lizard Video will consist of B-movies, slashers, and exploitation films. You can also rent VCRs, in case you ditched yours in the early aughts. Check out the soft opening starting this Saturday. [Pittsburgh Magazine]
