What's CITY Talking About
UPMC, Highmark Give Millions To City
The two health giants are donating a combined $45 million for new fire trucks, ambulances, and other equipment for first responders over the next five years, Mayor Corey O’Connor announced yesterday. This is the most recent in a series of donations from nonprofits, who do not pay property taxes to the city. [TribLive / City Cast Pittsburgh]
- Pittsburgh is on track to end the year with a roughly $24 million deficit, which City Controller Rachael Heisler calls an “unsustainable trajectory.” [TribLive]
City Council Passes Tax on Gaming Terminals
The new tax on skill games and other machines could generate millions of dollars annually, but it’s unclear if the city will actually be able to collect it. The state Supreme Court recently ruled that skill games are effectively slot machines, which can not be taxed by local governments. PA lawmakers have 120 days to decide whether to tax games at a state level. [🔒 Post-Gazette / City Cast Pittsburgh]
Pirates Open Legacy Hall at PNC Park
There’s a new memorabilia display and event space next to the left field entrance along Federal Street. Check out the wall of autographed baseballs, the original home plate from Forbes Field, a section honoring Hall of Famer Dave Parker, and a model of Three Rivers Stadium. It’s open to all ticketed fans, as long as there isn’t an event booked. [KDKA]
