What's CITY Talking About
Be Prepared for Parkway East Closures
Commercial Street in Frick Park will close on Thursday while contractors test their system for moving the bridge. Crews are preparing for a controlled demolition of the bridge next month, where they plan to slide a new structure into its place on Interstate 376. The construction will shut down Parkway East for 25 days. See the timeline and detours. [Post-Gazette / WTAE]
Deluzio Welcomes Release of ICE Detainee
Springdale resident and asylum seeker Randy Cordova Flores was released last week, four months after ICE arrested him during a traffic stop. Western PA Congressman Chris Deluzio says that, like Flores, “more than 75% of the people who were detained [at Moshannon Valley Processing Center] were not people who were charged with serious crimes or violent crimes.” [Public Source / WESA]
City Wants To Convert Vacant Lots in Larimer
Pittsburgh officials are seeking $15 million in state funding to prepare 200-plus lots for redevelopment. The city is encouraging developers to propose plans for housing and mixed-use projects. Whether the city can receive the funds depends on PA’s state budget, which is due June 30 (but rarely gets passed before the deadline). [TribLive]
2 Synagogues Merge into New Temple
Members of Temple Sinai in Squirrel Hill and Rodef Shalom in Shadyside formed a new temple this week called Beit Kulanu, Hebrew for “a house for all of us.” The merger brings together more than 1,000 households, creating one of the largest Reform congregations in the Pittsburgh region. - Tree of Life Synagogue in Squirrel HIll will begin rebuilding this fall to include a 300-seat theater and sanctuary, classrooms, a social hall, and a museum. [WTAE]
