🍺 Is Pittsburgh's beer scene in trouble?
June 8, 2026 · — Laura Tsutsui
Happy Monday! City Cast’s Laura Tsutsui here filling in for Francesca.
How’d you like $250 in honor of America’s 250th? I wouldn’t say no! Westmoreland County state Rep. Eric Davanzo is proposing just that. The state overcollected nearly a billion dollars in taxes (!) and Davanzo says that money should be redistributed to Pennsylvanians to help with rising prices.

A New Future for Penn Brewery?
The land Penn Brewery sits on is still up for sheriff's sale, but the auction's been pushed to July 6 and at least three groups have reportedly expressed interest in buying before then. The historic brewery, which filed for bankruptcy in April, is still open but with fewer hours and no food service. [🔒 Post-Gazette]

Pitt Ends Lease with Hampton Inn
The University of Pittsburgh leased space at the hotel to house up to 250 students last year, when a record-breaking class of 5,800 freshmen enrolled. The city’s zoning board ruled it would need a new permit to keep leasing the space this school year, — since using hotel rooms for student housing amounts to dormitory use — leading Pitt to back out and make other arrangements for incoming students. Innamorato Shares Clean Tech Goals
Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato signed an executive order that she says will help position the county as a leader in clean technology and advanced manufacturing. It calls for establishing an action team to guide investment in clean tech businesses and adopt clean procurement standards for county buildings and vehicles. [Allegheny County]
$1M in Funding for Small Arts Groups Restored
Pennsylvania’s state arts agency voted to restore a grant program for small arts groups that it had slated to end this fiscal year, after arts advocates spoke out against the decision. Groups with budgets under $100,000 will be able to apply for $5,000 grants through the reinstated program. [WESA]

Tips For Tick Season In Pittsburgh

While ticks can be found year-round, common disease-carrying species are most active during the warm summer months from May to August. Here’s what you can do to keep yourself safe from tick-borne diseases while enjoying the outdoors.
Dress the Part
Treat clothes, shoes, and outdoor gear with permethrin, and apply insect repellent to your clothes and skin as well. If possible, wear long sleeves and pants. Bonus points for light-colored clothing; it’ll be easier to see (and remove) ticks.
Check, Check, and Check Again
After time in the garden or local parks, throw your clothes into the dryer on a high setting and perform a thorough tick-check on your body. Make sure to check all the warmest areas like your armpits, groin, and behind your ears. Ticks can be as small as poppy seeds and easily hide in hair, so the more thorough you are, the safer you’ll be.
If you can, take a shower within two hours of coming inside. It’s a great chance to do that tick-check, and can help wash unattached ticks off your body.

😎 Stay-cation’s all I ever wanted… and if I’m staying in Pittsburgh, I’d love to book a room at The Atterbury, a new venue within the historic Fulton Building. An official open date hasn’t been announced, but the space — formerly the Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel — will feature a new restaurant, 300 renovated rooms, and nods to local history throughout.
