Aquarium on the North Shore?!

The Pittsburgh Zoo is considering building an aquatic destination on the North Shore. “Pennsylvania is the most populous state without a stand-alone aquarium,” says the Zoo's president and CEO. No decisions have been made yet on a timeline or location. [Pittsburgh Zoo]

The Heinz Endowments is contributing $750,000 to help the city finish its 2050 comprehensive plan — a blueprint for how Pittsburgh should grow and improve over the next 25 years. The plan is only partially complete and has been criticized for its hefty price tag, especially given the city’s financial struggles. [WESA / City Cast Pittsburgh]

Credit Union vs. Bank: What’s the Difference And Does It Matter in Pittsburgh?

Sponsored message from Clearview Federal Credit Union.

What’s the real difference between a credit union and a bank — and does it actually matter?

The clearest distinction has to do with ownership. Traditional banks are for-profit institutions owned by shareholders. Their goal is to generate returns for investors.

Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives owned by their members, AKA the people who have accounts there. When you join a credit union, you’re not just a customer, you’re technically a part-owner.

That structural difference may sound subtle, but it shapes everything from fee philosophy to customer experience.

At a bank, profits typically go to shareholders or toward expanding the business.

At a credit union, earnings are reinvested into:

  • Competitive rates
  • Member benefits
  • Local lending
  • Community initiatives

In a city like Pittsburgh, where people care about shopping local, supporting nonprofits, and showing up for their neighborhoods, that distinction hits differently. Your financial institution is part of the local ecosystem, too.
