🚐 Driverless shuttle at the airport?

March 16, 2026 · — Francesca Dabecco

We all know by now that our city’s finances are in the red.

It’s serious stuff, but I still got a laugh out of this Reddit thread asking what creative ways Pittsburgh can make up its $40 million budget deficit.

I’ll leave you with this response 😆

“Bob Nutting dunk tank. $100 a throw, and you can pay $150 to let Skenes throw for you.”

$1.7 Billion Penguins Sale Moves Forward

The Sports and Exhibition Authority said Fenway Sports Group can sell the team to Hoffman Family of Companies — but not without expressing frustration with FSG’s big profit and failure to fulfill its promises to Lower Hill. The SEA board is calling on FSG, who is making a $800 million profit from the sale, to put a small percentage back into the arena and community development. [TribLive / Post-Gazette]

Pittsburgh Families Fight to Protect Patient Privacy

A federal judge recently issued a scathing ruling saying the Department of Justice can't force UPMC Children's Hospital to hand over the medical records for young trans patients — but the legal battle isn't over, and Children’s has stopped providing most forms of gender-affirming care. The lawyer representing these local families explains why she found it "hugely disappointing" that UPMC didn't bring its own legal challenge against the government and what's happening with similar cases across the country. Pittsburgh Gets Another Boost for NFL Draft

The state is investing nearly $3.5 million to support programs that clean streets, expand outdoor dining, assist new businesses, and help people experiencing homelessness. These funds will also support the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership’s effort to fill vacant storefronts before April. [Post-Gazette / City Cast Pittsburgh]

Driverless Shuttle Proposed for PIT Airport

Autonomous shuttles could replace traditional parking lot buses to connect flyers to the hotel, parking facilities, and the new landside terminal. The public can submit a comment on the multimillion dollar proposal through April 14. [TribLive / PA]

Traffic Patterns Change in Oakland … Again

A former bus-only lane on Fifth Avenue is now open to regular traffic as construction progresses for the University Line project — a rapid bus route that’ll connect Oakland and Downtown. These changes are expected to last up to eight weeks, and Pitt Mobility is urging pedestrians to be extra vigilant. [TribLive]

At a time when we’re so glued to our phones (I bet that’s how you’re reading this right now), it’s good to slow down, put pen to paper, and get creative.

Whether you’re looking to send some snail mail or start a new journal, Pittsburgh has some ink-credible small businesses to fulfill all of your stationary needs.

1. DooBoo

East Liberty’s newest shop, DooBoo, is as cute as its name. The stationary store sells goods made by Asian artists and small businesses — fun colored pens and highlighters, stamps of all shapes and sizes, notebooks for writing and drawing, greeting cards, art prints, stickers, and more. I circled the store at least a dozen times and found something new to admire on every lap. Keep tabs on their Instagram for special events like mystery bag sales and matcha pop-ups.

2. Sapling & Sons

Inside Sapling & Sons’ stationary and gift store in Mt. Lebanon, you’ll find a wall lined with unique cards for all kinds of celebrations, funky note pads and pens, desk calendars, and journals of all colors. Plus, they carry a bunch of other gift items like puzzles, mugs, books, and candles. The store owner also operates Sapling Press, a local letterpress company that designs and prints greeting cards.

3. Wildcard

You could spend all day perusing the massive wall of greeting cards, racks of stationary and journals, and tons of cute writing materials at Wildcard in Lawrenceville — and that’s just a small section of what they carry. Check out tables stacked with Pittsburgh-themed decor and gifts like neighborhood pennants, art prints with the three rivers, and an Andy Warhol soup can puzzle.
