What's CITY Talking About

We’re Missing Out on $100 Million+ in Tax Revenue
A new report found the city, county, and Pittsburgh Public Schools are each losing out on tens of millions of dollars every year from the “Big Five” tax-exempt nonprofits: UPMC, Allegheny Health Network, Pitt, Duquesne, and CMU. Local leaders have tried for decades — with very little success — to get these big nonprofits to pay up and contribute to city services. In the last year and a half, all three taxing bodies raised taxes on residents to fill budget gaps.
- In January, UPMC donated $10 million to go toward the city’s aging emergency vehicle fleet, but that’s far below what they’d owe in property taxes. [Post-Gazette / City Cast Pittsburgh]
New Life for Former Westinghouse Site?
Four years after Amazon scrapped its plans to build a distribution center on the property, there’s a new proposal to turn the former Westinghouse Research and Technology Park into a walkable, mixed-use development. Plans for the Churchill site include grocery stores, restaurants, housing, and more. [TribLive]
$3 Million in Federal Funds for Affordable Housing
Allegheny County is receiving money to turn vacant and under-occupied apartment buildings into housing for people experiencing homelessness. At least 50 new units will help people transition from temporary shelters to stable housing, U.S. Rep. Summer Lee announced this week. [WESA]
NFL Draft Committee Shares Sustainability Plan
Ahead of what will likely be the city’s largest-ever tourist event, the Draft's organizing committee is partnering with local organizations to plant trees, hang flower baskets, and redistribute surplus event food to neighbors in need. The goal is to help ensure the Draft has a "lasting, positive impact across the region.” [Visit Pittsburgh]
- Pittsburgh’s hotels are almost sold out ahead of the NFL Draft, and the short-term rental market is surging. [Trib Live / City Cast Pittsburgh]
Isaly’s Returns To The Strip This Summer
The nostalgic dairy and deli shop is set to open an old school-style Isaly’s on Penn Avenue this summer — complete with its iconic chipped ham sandwiches and skyscraper ice cream cones, of course! The chain’s owner is working with the Heinz History Center to make the space feel like the original. [KDKA]

The Best Pies in Pittsburgh for Pi Day

You can eat pie for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or dessert at these local bakeries.
Piebird Pastry Kitchen
Lawrenceville
If variety is what you’re looking for, order a butter-crusted beauty from Piebird. Pick from mixed berry oat crisp, bourbon pecan, apple brown butter crumb, and more. Keep an eye out for their large sheet pan pie trays at pop-up markets around town, or put in a special catering order.
- Check out Piebird’s pop-up at Caffe d’Amore this Saturday, 10 a.m. until sellout.
Five Points Artisan Bakeshop
Squirrel Hill
Grab a coffee from Espresso a Mano (located inside the bakery) to enjoy with a slice of pie from Five Points. In addition to fresh European-style breads and pastries, the bakery offers hand-sized pies in flavors like apple, chocolate pecan, and blueberry.
Pittsburgh Pie Guy
Pop-ups all over Pittsburgh
The Pittsburgh Pie Guy (which is actually two people) has sweet and savory pies in a range of sizes: mini, medium, and large. Look forward to their table at farmers markets around town — you can almost always find Pittsburgh Pie Guy at the Bloomfield Saturday Market.
- Pie Guy will be at Aslin Beer’s 3.14 celebration in the Strip District this Saturday. Check it out for beer, pizza, pie, and … math?
350° Bakery
South Side Slopes
While they’re known for their biscuit breakfast sandwiches with bacon jam, don’t skip 350° Bakery’s mini sweet and savory hand pies in flavors like cherry berry, apple, samosa, and broccoli cheddar.
The Pie Place
Bethel Park
The next time you’re shopping in the South Hill Village, swing by The Pie Place for flavors like fruits of the forest or peanut butter chocolate. They also offer “take and bake” pies that you can freeze for up to a month until you’re ready to bake.
