What's CITY Talking About

Downtown Construction Almost Done
Arts Landing, Market Square, and dozens of small retail and art installations are nearing completion in advance of the NFL Draft. Regional leaders are celebrating that progress — not just because of the big public party coming in April, but because these assets are “going to be here for the rest of our lives and for future generations.” [TribLive]

Cutch Won’t Come Back To the Pirates
Beloved outfielder Andrew McCutchen is ending his second stint with the Buccos and reportedly signed a minor league deal with the Texas Rangers. The All-Star player spent a total of 12 years with the Pirates. [Sports Illustrated]
Former Councilwoman Darlene Harris Dies
The proud North Sider and longtime City Council member died from cardiac arrest on Friday. She was known for her love of (and fierce efforts to protect) animals, relationships with her constituents, and advocacy for marginalized communities and labor unions. Her colleagues called her “fiesty” — she held fast her right to smoke in her city council office. [TribLive / 🔒 Post-Gazette]
Gas Prices Increase After Strikes on Iran
The Pittsburgh area saw a 17 cent increase at the pump last week following the U.S. and Israel’s strikes on Iran. The national average could reach $3.25 to $3.50 per gallon in the coming weeks. [Axios Pittsburgh]

Club Cafe Closes Daytime Coffee Shop
After just five months in business, the South Side music spot is ending its daytime coffee service on March 13. “We must focus our resources on our main goal: maintaining our commitment to the local and touring artist community,” owners said in a social media post. [Club Cafe]

Could Your City Be Better?
Every week on our new podcast “Your City Could Be Better,” David Plotz sits down with local insiders from across the U.S., including your favorite City Cast hosts, to discuss how cities are growing, evolving, and (sometimes) even getting it right. Subscribe today!

Something fun! Have you ever visited Kamin Science Center’s Miniature Railroad & Village? They add a new historic landmark to the display every year. This year’s addition: a replica of the Presque Isle Lighthouse in Erie, affectionately known as the “Flash Light.”
I think my personal favorite is still the tiny Gus & Yia Yia’s ice ball cart on the North Side.
Check out the exhibit and more fun things to do in March.
