😊 Pittsburgh’s friendliest neighborhoods
February 27, 2026 · — Francesca Dabecco
How friendly is your neighborhood? 😊
There’s a new ranking by Nextdoor putting Squirrel Hill South, Wilkins Township, and Greenfield in the top three. See where yours lands on the list.

It’s not a perfect science. Maybe it’s very Mister Rogers of me, but I believe you can find friendly faces in every corner of the Burgh.

What's CITY Talking About
County DHS Director Leaves for NYC
Erin Dalton, the director of Allegheny County’s Department of Human Services, is leaving her role to take a similar job in New York City. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he selected Dalton in large part because of her work reducing homelessness in the Pittsburgh region. The county plans to launch a nationwide search for Dalton's replacement. - More change: City Council approved Eric Sloan to lead the Department of Parks and Recreation. Sloan says he wants to partner with more community groups, diversify programming at recreation and senior centers, and start a city-sponsored flag football league. [TribLive]
More Food Trucks for Downtown?
The city approved several new vending locations ahead of the NFL Draft in April, allowing more carts, trucks, and tents to operate Downtown. Pittsburgh’s mobile vendor regulations have gone mostly unchanged for the past three decades. Applications open for the new spots next month. [🔒 Post-Gazette]
- The city also hopes to fill brick-and-mortar storefronts before the NFL Draft and keep them operating in Downtown through a rent abatement program. Hear host Megan Harris share Pittsburgh’s efforts with City Cast’s national audience. [PMP / 🎧 Your City Could Be Better]

Beloved French Bakery Closes in Millvale
Jean-Marc Chatellier's French Bakery is shutting down on Saturday after more than 30 years of business on North Avenue. “Small bakeries like ours will exist only in memories, replaced by chains … It's becoming economically unfeasible to operate a small chef-owned bakery,” the business shared on Facebook. City Council Keeps Garbage Away from Homes
Pittsburgh City Council voted to require a 500-foot distance between homes and garbage-handling facilities. Hazlewood residents are relieved, as the new rule could prevent a nearby recycling facility from expanding into a waste transfer center. [WESA / 🎧 City Cast Pittsburgh]

Local Girl Scout Gets Her Own Day in Pittsburgh
ICYMI: This story just keeps getting better. Six-year-old Pim Neill broke the record for Girl Scout cookie sales in a single season, and Mayor Corey O’Connor dedicated Feb. 20 as “Pim Neill Day.” The Baldwin-Whitehall resident now has her eyes on passing the all-time cookie sale record of about 180,000 boxes. 🪑 Weekend reading: I loved this ode to the Pittsburgh parking chair recently published in the Wall Street Journal.
If you don’t have a login, here’s an excerpt of one of my favorite parts:
“The unwritten law extends to other household castoffs spotted curbside: a vacuum cleaner, a green leather ottoman, a toilet, an elliptical machine, an ironing board, a step ladder and a statue of Jesus with outstretched arms.”
Let’s hope we don’t get any more big snowstorms this season. But if we do … be sure to respect the sanctity of the parking chair!
