✈️ Why TSA wants to charge you $45

December 9, 2025 · — Francesca Dabecco

Hey there, it’s day two of our year-end membership campaign and I’m inviting you to become a City Cast Pittsburgh Neighbor.

In 2026, we want Pittsburgh to feel like a place where people know each other a little better and care a little more. City Cast Neighbors is our way of making that happen — a community of locals who celebrate what makes life here unique and care about the issues facing our city.

For $10/month or $100/year, you’ll unlock perks that help you engage more deeply with local life while supporting this daily newsletter.

📣 Join this week and we’ll send you a City Cast beanie, a little badge of belonging for Pittsburgh’s coldest months.

What's CITY Talking About

City Taxes May Go Up in 2026

Councilor Barb Warwick filed a bill to increase the current millage rate 30%, which Council says could raise over $41 million. Critics say the 2026 budget is short over $30 million, and a citywide property tax increase would both plug those holes and help pay for new snow plows, ambulances, and more. A vote could come as soon as Dec. 22. [Trib / Post-Gazette 🔒]

PennSTART Your Engines

Work has begun on the first phase of a new $30 million test track for autonomous vehicles in Westmoreland County. The PennSTART facility is on track to open late next year and includes varying terrain, an oval that allows for highway speeds, and controlled training space for first responders to simulate accidents involving autonomous and electric vehicles. The Year That Changed Pittsburgh Food

It’s hard to imagine a time when our city wasn't popping up on national food lists, but ten years ago it was almost unheard of for us to get nods from Bon Appétit and James Beard. As some of Pittsburgh’s most beloved restaurants celebrate their 10th anniversary this year, we explore why they flourished and how 2015 changed our local food scene. [🎧 City Cast Pittsburgh]

Find this distilling equipment decorated for the holidays at Kingfly Spirits, a family-owned craft distillery in the Strip District. Get cozy by the fire on the first floor or head upstairs to catch a show in the loft space. They’re always hosting live jazz, comedians, and more performances — plus a bunch of cocktail classes and tasting events.

While you’re there, see if the bartender will make you a fussfungle, a historic cocktail from McKeesport that changed drinking culture and inspired mischief.

It’s like an old fashioned but sweeter. Thanks to my Kingfly bartender Will for whipping up a special version for me during my last visit.
