What's CITY Talking About?

bike lane graphic
Parking protected bike lanes like the one proposed for Penn Avenue run afoul of PA Vehicle Code, which requires cars be parked within 12” of the curb. Pittsburgh’s built them anyway using exclusively city funding (i.e., not state) on city-owned roads. (Pittsburgh DOMI)

Strip District Bike Lane Project Begins?

The city's ready to break ground on its Penn Avenue rightsizing project this week — if a judge doesn't intervene to stop it. Small business owners requested an emergency injunction on four counts, including that the plans violate city fire code and include a type of bike lane prohibited by state law. We fact checked: both of these assertions are true. But it's more complicated than that!

  • We explain the drama — and what it all means for the identity of the Strip — on today's City Cast Pittsburgh podcast. [🎧 City Cast Pittsburgh]

Funding for Libraries, Parks & More

Allegheny Regional Asset District’s 2026 preliminary budget proposes $146.7 million for parks and trails, arts and culture, libraries, and more local amenities. These investments are funded by a 1% county sales tax. The board votes in November. [RAD]

Steelers Get Lucky in Ireland

Fans from all over the world waved Terrible Towels at Croke Park in Dublin on Sunday as the Steelers took a 24-21 victory against the Minnesota Vikings. It was a win for late Steelers chairman Daniel M. Rooney, who was the U.S. ambassador to Ireland from 2009-12. [Associated Press]

Fleury Says Final Farewell To Pittsburgh

Penguins legend and goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury played in front of a sold-out preseason crowd at PPG Paints Arena on Saturday — sporting black and gold one last time with a win against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Penguins management signed Fleury to a ceremonial professional tryout contract so he could “retire” in Pittsburgh. [TribLive]

🌀Find this swirling display of photos at the Pittsburgh Glass Center in Friendship.

Did you know? Anyone can visit for a free, self-guided tour during open hours. Check out the contemporary glass exhibition, explore the studios, browse the gift shop, and meet artists at work — or get your hands dirty at a Make-It-Now workshop.

Don’t miss a visit to the top floor, where you can watch glassblowing from the rooftop patio. I had so much fun watching them make their hot seasonal item — glass pumpkins. Take a class and make one for yourself!

The Glass Center is a great place to learn about Pittsburgh history, too. Long before we were a steel town, Pittsburgh was known as a glass city. The city’s location along a river system made it an ideal spot to access raw materials, furnace coal, and trade routes.

💥 Fun fact: According to the Glass Center, by 1920, the Pittsburgh area produced 80% of the nation’s glass.
