What's CITY Talking About?

💸 PRT OKs Budget Cuts, Fare Hike
Pittsburgh Regional Transit’s board reluctantly approved a new budget that includes massive service cuts, a fare increase, staff layoffs, and no service after 11 p.m. — effective in February. The board is legally required to adopt a balanced budget by June 30 in order to keep federal grants, but PRT says it will continue lobbying for more state funding so that the cuts aren't ultimately needed. [Union Progress]
- 🏛️ The PA budget was also due on June 30, but state legislature once again blew past the deadline. Lawmakers are still debating details of the proposal, including money for transit across the state. [SpotlightPA]
- 🚦 How did we get here? And how can Pittsburgh get a well-funded transit system? [🎧 City Cast Pittsburgh]
🚙 Pittsburgh Reduces Fatal Crashes, Injuries
City data shows that crashes, fatalities, and serious injuries declined for the fourth year in a row. Officials credit the progress to traffic-calming efforts made through the Vision Zero plan. [Union Progress / 🎧 City Cast Pittsburgh]
- 🚲 Will Allegheny County get on board? After two pedestrian fatalities in a single day, BikePGH is urging the county to adopt Vision Zero. [BikePGH]
- 🛑 Two pedestrians were hurt after a driver plowed through barricades at OpenStreetsPGH over the weekend. [WTAE]
⚽ Pittsburgh Riveters Head to Playoffs
The Riveters finished their first-ever regular season with a win and are headed to the playoffs. Highmark Stadium will host Central Conference semifinals July 4 and July 6. Whoever wins the semifinals will represent the region at the USL W League national semifinals July 11-13. [City Paper]
