What's CITY Talking About?

🏭 Trump Visits Pittsburgh, Announces Tariff Increase

At a rally at U.S. Steel's Irvin Works in West Mifflin, President Donald Trump announced he's doubling the tariff on foreign steel to 50%. "Pittsburgh very soon will be respected around the world as the steel city again," he told a crowd of steelworkers. Trump visited the plant to tout a "planned partnership" between U.S. Steel and Nippon Steel but did not share many new details about the agreement. [90.5 WESA]

  • ✒️ Trump later told reporters that he still needs to approve the deal and hasn't seen the final details yet.
  • 💲 In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump added that he also plans to double tariffs on aluminum, starting Wednesday. [Associated Press]

💊 Giant Eagle Takes Over Rite Aid Prescriptions

Rite Aid filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this month and is selling off most of its pharmacy assets. Giant Eagle is set to take over prescriptions from 78 stores across PA and Ohio. [TribLive]

🦬 Baby Buffalo Born in South Park

Welcome Kai! The South Park Game Preserve announced the arrival of a new “bouncing baby” buffalo — calf to mother Lily and father Big Head. The preserve is expecting a second calf later this year, when mother Rosie gives birth. [📝 Hey Pittsburgh]

  • ❓How’d the buffalo get there? Allegheny County commissioners purchased a herd of buffalo for conservation efforts in 1927. Over 60 million buffalo once roamed North America, until hunting and U.S. policy — intentionally harming Indigenous communities — nearly drove them to extinction. [Allegheny County]
  • 👀 Follow Friends of the South Park Buffalo Preserve on Facebook. The group raises awareness about the buffalo family, and works with the county to improve conditions for the animals.

⌛ What Will Gainey Do With Rest of Term?

Mayor Ed Gainey lost the Democratic primary, but he’s got seven months left to lead Pittsburgh. He could try to cement his legacy and set himself up for the next big thing, or sit back knowing he already made history. Host Megan Harris is taking bets and talking possibilities with TribLive’s Julia Burdelski. [🎧 City Cast Pittsburgh]
