🍅 Is your fav restaurant ‘Heinz Verified’?

May 20, 2025 · — Francesca Dabecco

Happy voting day 🗳️ Allegheny County sent out over 111,500 mail-in ballots for today's primary election, and as of last week, only about half have come back. We can do better than that!

📩 Drop off your ballot at the County Office Building, or spoil your mail-in ballot and go to your polling place like normal.

📝 Not sure about what’s on your ballot? Don’t fret. We’ve got it all in our procrastinator’s election guide.

🎧 Check out today’s City Cast Pittsburgh podcast for what happens behind the scenes on election night and when we might know who wins.

What's CITY Talking About?

⚖️ PA Lawmakers Push Pet Cremation Bill

Following a recent pet burial and cremation scandal, a group of bipartisan legislators are working on a bill to better regulate animal cremation. The state Attorney General’s Office charged Patrick Vereb, owner of a Hazelwood funeral home, with theft by deception; he allegedly took money for cremations but instead disposed of animals in landfills. Vereb’s also accused of giving customers the wrong ashes. [TribLive]

🚍 Bus-Only Lanes Coming to Downtown

Pittsburgh Regional Transit has started installing red bus lanes Downtown as part of its new University Line, which is meant to provide faster, more reliable service between Downtown and Oakland. It's one of the last steps before the line opens June 22. [Union Progress]

🍅 Uber Eats, Kraft-Heinz Launch ‘Heinz Verified’ Program

Are you a ride-or-die Heinz ketchup fan? Customers in Pittsburgh, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, and Miami will now be able to tell if a restaurant on Uber Eats serves their favorite condiment with a new “Heinz Verified” designation. [Business Wire]

🐎 Henry the Police Horse Retires

One of the county’s longest-serving Mounted Patrol Unit horses received a retirement sendoff, and will settle into his next chapter at Round Hill Park, a public park and farm in Elizabeth Township. Henry had a nearly 20-year career — and even beat cancer in 2011 after undergoing an experimental procedure to save his eye. [KDKA]

Let’s play a game! Where in Pittsburgh can you find this mosaic of the fountain at Point State Park and the city skyline?

🌟 Shout out to Maggie M., Carye B., Adrianna G., Meg J., Joann A., Pamela P., Thomas C., and Michelle K. who correctly guessed the last “Where Is It?” challenge! ⬇️

Find this mosaic mural of zebras, a bass player, and a skateboarder at Forbes Avenue and Gist Street in Uptown (aka The Bluff). This vibrant piece is by James Simon — an artist you may recognize from other installations around town, like the Welcome to Troy Hill sign. (My personal favorite is the woman on the bike reading poetry in Millvale.) Simon worked with kids at ACH Clear Pathways Summer Art Camp to bring this design to life.

Speaking of bass players — here are the best places to see live jazz in Pittsburgh 🎶

🌟 How about some hometown pride? Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin, who grew up in McKees Rocks, was just named one of TIME Magazine’s 100 most influential people in health. Ever since he experienced cardiac arrest during a game in 2023, he’s worked to ensure that more schools and youth teams have access to AEDs ❤️‍🩹
