What's CITY Talking About?

💸 PA House Moves on Transit Funding
The House Transportation Committee approved legislation to direct nearly $300 million in new funding to PA’s transit agencies in the next state budget — and it's headed to the full House for a vote. The funding would come from a share of the state sales tax revenue. [Pennsylvania Capital-Star]
- 🚎 This funding could save Pittsburgh Regional Transit from making dire service cuts and fare increases. A similar bill passed in the House last year, but it wasn’t considered in the GOP-controlled Senate. [🎧 City Cast Pittsburgh]
🏡 Developers Can Now Build on Smaller Lots
City Council approved a bill that’ll allow developers to build on smaller lots, freeing up more land for residential construction.
- ➡️ Some council members were reluctant to support the bill, worrying it could hold up broader zoning changes, such as the inclusionary zoning package Mayor Ed Gainey proposed. [TribLive]
- 🚧 Inclusionary zoning requires a certain number of affordable units in new builds. Here’s how it’s currently in play in Lawrenceville. [🎧 City Cast Pittsburgh]
📖 Pittsburgh Author Wins Pulitzer Prize
CMU history professor Edda Fields-Black won a Pulitzer Prize for her book, “Combee: Harriet Tubman, the Combahee River Raid, and Black Freedom During the Civil War,” the story of Tubman’s leadership in a 1863 raid that leveled rice plantations and freed more than 750 enslaved people in South Carolina.
