🤖 Duolingo says it's ‘AI-first’
May 6, 2025 · — Francesca Dabecco
Did yinz hear? Vegfest announced a date for their plant-based festival on the North Side: Aug. 16! It's one of my favorite days of the year. But if you need a tasty pregame, here's a list of spring events that'll make your mouth water 😋

What's CITY Talking About?

🏒 Crosby To Play in World Championships
Penguins captain Sidney Crosby will suit up for Team Canada at the IIHF World Championships, May 9-25 in Denmark and Sweden. The last time he skated in the championships was 2015, when he served as Canadian team captain and won gold. [KDKA]

🔍 Security Report on Governor’s Mansion Will Stay Private
The consultant who was hired to review security after last month's arson attack says the findings won’t be made public because of their “sensitive nature.” But a lawyer for the nonprofit Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press argues that since “we’re spending taxpayer dollars to review taxpayer paid employees working in a taxpayer owned building,” some of that report should be made visible. 💸 More Movement in Esplanade Development
Pittsburgh Public Schools Board approved a tax-diversion plan for the multi-million dollar Esplanade development on the North Shore — meaning tax revenue from the project would be available for nearby infrastructure and affordable housing. Pittsburgh City Council also approved the tax diversion; Allegheny County still needs to give it the green light. [90.5 WESA]

🤖 Duolingo To Become ‘AI-First’ Company
The Pittsburgh-based language learning company recently announced plans to gradually replace contractors with AI. One former Duolingo contractor says this policy isn’t new and that Duolingo has already replaced some of its translators and writers with AI. [The Verge / Tech Crunch]

Where Is It?

Let’s play a game! Where in Pittsburgh can you find this mural of Andy Warhol and Andrew Carnegie sitting under hair dryers?
🌟 Congrats to Diane T., Al H., and Stacy C., who correctly guessed the last “Where Is It?” challenge! ⬇️

🐎 Find this ornamental horse at 3485 Butler Street — a former horse stable built in 1888. This historic building is now used for offices on Pittsburgh’s “Robotics Row.”
👀 Look for it the next time you’re visiting Lower Lawrenceville — maybe to discover the history of a Pirates legend ⚾ at the Roberto Clemente Museum, snag some sourdough-crust pizza 🍕 from Driftwood Oven, or wine and dine 🍷 at Morcilla.
