🎙️ We talk to Pgh’s superintendent
February 25, 2025 · — Francesca Dabecco
Real talk, neighbor: Pittsburgh Public Schools is facing a lot of big questions. Does it need to close schools, and if so, how many? Is federal funding about to disappear? What does it take to build a district where every student can thrive? 🚌🎒
We’re talking through it all with Superintendent Wayne Walters on today’s City Cast Pittsburgh podcast 🎧

What's CITY Talking About?
💼 Pgh Workers Affected by Federal Firings
Between 60 and 70 workers represented by the American Federation of Government Employees union have been fired in Pennsylvania, including about 20 in Pittsburgh. The union (which represents a significant portion of federal employees) hasn’t received any communication about terminations from agency heads, so the exact number of layoffs is still unclear. 🌈 QMNTY Closet Opens on the North Side
The free thrift store has clothing, hygiene products, work attire, and other gender-affirming necessities for trans and non-binary Pittsburghers. It's operated by local groups TransYOUniting and Proud Haven. [QBurgh]
🐘 Sewickely Attorney Named Allegheny GOP Chair
Jason Richey was elected to replace outgoing county chairman Sam DeMarco, who left his post to work for U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick. Richey, who formerly ran for governor, won the vote after both of his opponents withdrew from the race. [90.5 WESA]

Where Is It?

Let’s play a game! Where in Pittsburgh can you find this blue neon sign in the photo above? 👀

Yinz get a pass on last week’s “Where Is It?” photo challenge. Reader Megan P. wrote in to let me know that this mural outside of Warrington Beer Depot in Allentown was actually recently taken down!
Some of my favorite businesses are gone, too. (Open Road found new digs in Garfield and Onion Maiden is closed for renovations 😢) But this street is still definitely worth a stroll. Allentown is known for its offbeat businesses that’ve become a mecca for the goth kids — curiosity shops, a “misfit” fitness studio, a heavy metal coffee shop, and even a hidden speakeasy! 💀🍸
And since the Mount Washington Transit Tunnel is closed for renovations, the T is running through Allentown again. It’s the perfect time to explore the neighborhood! 🚋
