✏️ Did yinz know that Pittsburgh wasn’t always spelled with an “H”? Over the years, our city has debated, lost, and reclaimed our “H.” But why was it so complicated?

On today’s City Cast Pittsburgh podcast, we’re talking with historian and author Virginia Montanez to learn about the basic rules of how we spell things (really), why Pittsburgh was so bad at it (shocking), and how newspapermen and intellectuals made everything worse 🫠

How Pittsburgh Got Its ‘H’ Back

What's CITY Talking About?

💵 County Property Tax Deadline Extended

You should be getting your property tax bill in the mail soon — and you may be able to disregard the deadline. County Treasurer Erica Rocchi Brusselars says the date printed is an error and doesn’t account for the 31-day deadline extension. But if you can, pay your bill early so you can get a 2% discount! • ⚖️ A judge tossed out a Pittsburgh Public Schools lawsuit that hoped to force a county-wide property tax reassessment — our first since 2012 — and told PPS attorneys that if they want more money, they could start by raising taxes. [90.5 WESA]

🏟️ Upgrades for Pgh Sports Venues

The Sports and Exhibition Authority approved a total of $10 million in improvements for PNC Park, Acrisure Stadium, and PPG Paints Arena — including ADA-compliant seating, security enhancements, and Wi-Fi upgrades. [KDKA]

🛢️ Diesel Spill in the Allegheny River

Around 2,000 gallons of fuel spilled into Pine Creek last week when a fuel tanker flipped along Route 28, and the spill reached the Allegheny River. Clean-up and wildlife rescue crews are responding. [Allegheny Front]

🐦 Fox Chapel School Donated to the Aviary

After students move to their new middle school on the senior campus, Shady Side Academy will become the National Aviary’s new breeding and conservation center, teaching hospital, and educational space. The project is expected to cost $17 million, and opening celebrations are planned for 2027. [TribLive]

Where Is It?

Let’s play a game! Where in Pittsburgh can you find the gold dragon and lion painting in the photo above? 👀

🌟 Congrats to Annie S., Heather B., Abby W., Courtney C., and Jessica B., who correctly guessed the last “Where Is It?” challenge! ⬇️

📸 The closeup of colorful houses in last week’s “Where Is It?” photo challenge was from this mural in Bellevue, a borough just outside of Pittsburgh’s North Side. The walkable main street has cute shops and restaurants — including some new businesses like Wunderbar, Vintage Max Mercantile, and Yoga for the People.

🍾 Fun fact! Bellevue was a dry town even before Prohibition, and businesses didn’t start selling alcohol there until 2015.
