What's CITY Talking About?
🚫 Trump Imposes Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum
President Donald Trump ordered a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports Monday night, without exemptions for U.S. allies like Canada and Mexico. [CNN]
- 🚧 The United Steelworkers union, headquartered in Pittsburgh, said it welcomes Trump’s effort to help the industry but opposes tariffs on Canada: “We must distinguish between trusted trade partners, like Canada, and those who are seeking to undercut our industries as they work to dominate the global market." [United Steelworkers]
- 🏭 The news comes just days after Trump said Japan’s Nippon Steel is considering investing in U.S. Steel instead of buying the company outright. [TribLive]
- 🤔 Neither company has publicly commented on Trump’s statement about the investment, and local leaders are waiting for more details. [WTAE]
- ❌ Former President Joe Biden blocked the $15 billion sale of U.S. Steel to Nippon Steel last month, and Trump previously said he also opposes the deal. Catch up on all the drama. [✍️ Hey Pittsburgh]
🏗️ Inside the Esplanade Development
A new development on the North Side has received lots of attention, partly because it could bring a Ferris wheel to the riverfront. There's excitement about turning a partially empty space into a busy waterfront site, but the project also raises questions about how to ensure the people already living there don’t get priced out. PublicSource’s Rich Lord and Eric Jankiewicz join us on the City Cast Pittsburgh podcast to discuss the latest. [🎧 City Cast Pittsburgh]

⚖️ Lawmakers Push for Landslide Insurance
Two local state House members have re-introduced legislation to provide homeowners and municipalities with insurance for landslides — something several other states have already done. Here’s why landslides are an especially urgent issue for Pittsburgh. [WESA 90.5]

🏙️ Downtown ‘Arts Landing’ Plans Announced
The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust recently shared detailed plans for a new, 4-acre civic space in the Cultural District. The $31 million project aims to bring more people Downtown, and will feature a Great Lawn, pickleball courts, space for family-friendly activities, and a pedestrian-only Garden Walk. A soft opening is planned to coincide with the NFL Draft, April 23-25. [Pittsburgh Magazine]

Where Is It?

Let’s play a game! Where in Pittsburgh can you find the colorful house mural in the photo above? 👀
🌟 Congrats to Fern R., Alex P., and Zena K. who correctly guessed the last “Where Is It?” challenge!

Rockwell Park is a group of eight buildings in Point Breeze North that’ve been transformed into offices, stores, studios, and more. Swing by the East End Food Co-op to pick up some organic groceries, test your strength at ASCEND’s rock climbing gym, or grab a cup at Commonplace Coffee. (This location has a ton of room to set up your laptop to work or meet friends!)
🛒 What I’m excited about: Right near this “1914” Rockwell Park building, we’re getting a new Asian grocery! Fresh International Market is slated to open March 15.
