👀 Pittsburgh’s secret passageways
January 24, 2025 · — Francesca Dabecco
Happy Friday, neighbor! Another week, another … new study about how Pittsburgh’s the most affordable city for homebuyers 🤪 But is it really? Axios Pittsburgh reporter Ryan Deto joins us to dig into Redfin’s recent report on today’s City Cast Pittsburgh podcast 🎧 Plus, we’re sharing some ways you can avoid the cold by using “secret” passageways 👀

What's CITY Talking About?

🏙️ Plan To Revitalize the Golden Triangle
The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership’s three-year strategy includes a facelift for Market Square; pedestrian-friendly streetscape projects; 10 public art pieces; and non-traditional uses of empty office space. The PDP also wants to host four large-scale festivals per year (like Picklesburgh) and a bunch of smaller events featuring local artists. [TribLive]

🗳️ Tony Moreno To Run for Mayor
Retired Pittsburgh police officer Tony Moreno will enter the mayoral race as a Republican. It’s his second bid for office. He lost to Mayor Ed Gainey in the Democratic primary in 2021, but received enough write-in votes to run as a Republican in the general election. [WTAE]
- Moreno is the first Republican to announce his candidacy, but he could potentially face competition in the May primary. [90.5 WESA]
🤔 Gainey Celebrates Highmark Pledge, Skeptics React
Because nonprofits are mostly exempt from paying property taxes, local leaders have been trying (and mostly failing) to get big players like Highmark, UPMC, and CMU to invest back into the city. In an announcement this week, Mayor Ed Gainey said Highmark agreed to pay up if other nonprofits do too, but a spokesperson for the health giant said their position hasn’t changed since the Peduto administration. [90.5 WESA]
- Some city councilors say this isn’t anything new, and Gainey’s rival Corey O’Connor called it a political stunt. [TribLive]
- Wait, so they don’t actually pay their fair share? Here’s how it works and why this matters during a mayoral election. [🎧 City Cast Pittsburgh]
