🛑 New safety measures for Oakland
January 21, 2025 · — Francesca Dabecco

I hope you’re staying warm today, neighbor. While the low temps seem brutal, can you imagine shivering through Pittsburgh’s record low of -22°? Or trudging through deep snow, like the 23.6 inches we got on St. Patrick’s Day in 1993? 🥶🌨️
Today on the City Cast Pittsburgh podcast, host Megan Harris and I are bringing you a (cold) blast from the past and talking about the city’s historic winter weather — and how Pittsburgh was actually at the forefront of recording meteorological data 🌡️

What's CITY Talking About?
🕯️ PA Representative Matt Gergely Dies
Democratic state House member Matt Gergely, 45, died on Sunday after experiencing a medical emergency last month. Gergely represented the 35th District in Allegheny County, including parts of the Mon Valley. The house now sits at a 101-101 split between Democrats and Republicans. House Speaker Joanna McClinton will schedule a special election in the coming months. [90.5 WESA]
📝 Allegheny County Gets A New Health Board
County Executive Sara Innamorato overhauled the board late last year, appointing eight new members with expertise in issues like reproductive justice and environmental health (and only reappointing one member). At their first board meeting last week, members talked about narrowing health disparities and improving transparency. [PublicSource]
🛑 Safety Measures for Oakland’s Terrace Street
After a Pitt staffer was killed in a hit-and-run at the corner of Terrace and Darragh Streets last month, the city and university are working to improve pedestrian safety along the corridor. The city is making traffic signal adjustments, and Pitt is repainting curb and pavement markings. The university is also conducting a safety study and sharing findings with the city. [Pitt News]

Where Is It?

Let’s play a game! Where in Pittsburgh can you find the architectural design in the photo above? 👀 Bonus points if you can name what it is!
🌟 Congrats to Paola S., Carye B., Fran S., Bochy F., Dennis M, Rhyne R., & Mark H. who correctly guessed the last “Where Is It?” challenge! ⬇️

Is this what Pittsburgh looks like to birds? You can find this black-and-white, panoramic mural by Douglas Cooper at the Heinz History Center in the Strip District. Some readers thought this painting was located at Carnegie Mellon University — and that was a great guess! Cooper is a professor at CMU, and I hear he has a permanent installation there too.
Want more sketches of the Burgh? Check out Cooper’s book Steel Shadows.
