🛒 We’re getting a Wegmans
January 15, 2025 · — Francesca Dabecco
I hope you’re staying warm, neighbor! It’s bitterly cold out there. If you’re fatigued by the freezing temps, transport yourself to paradise at The National Aviary’s new Rainforest Retreat or Phipps Conservatory’s Orchid and Tropical Bonsai Show this week 🌺🌳

What's CITY Talking About?

🛒 We’re Getting a Wegmans
Wegmans is set to open its first Pittsburgh-area location as part of the Cranberry Springs development, just north of the UPMC Lemieux Complex. The chain will have produce, seafood, meat, cheese, a bakery and deli, and wine and beer. A construction timeline hasn’t been announced. [WPXI]
📚🚫 Book Ban Debate at Pine-Richland
Board members, administrators, and parents clashed Monday at a five-hour board meeting, which resulted in the rejection of the book “Angel of Greenwood,” a young adult novel set during the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. This follows the board’s efforts to control what books are allowed in district libraries. [TribLive / WPXI]

🏘️ Did Inclusionary Zoning Work In Lawrenceville?
Pittsburgh needs thousands of new homes, and local housing advocates say inclusionary zoning (or IZ) could help. IZ incentivizes or mandates that a percentage of units in new housing projects be priced affordably for lower income households.
- Does IZ work? Dave Breignan, executive director of Lawrenceville United, tells City Cast Pittsburgh that IZ policies have triumphed in his neighborhood — and that local leaders are relying on bad data to help them decide between two very different proposals.
- Get involved. Pittsburgh’s planning commission will take public comment on the proposals at 2 p.m. Jan. 28. You can attend virtually or in person Downtown. [🎧 City Cast Pittsburgh]

I’m still catching up on holiday goings-on and wanted to pay my respects to Richard Garber, who died on Dec. 30 — his 94th birthday! In 1971, Garber worked with Richard Moriarty at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh to develop the iconic Mr. Yuk symbol for a pioneering, kid-focused, poison education program.
We’re grateful for his life-saving work 💚
