The 2024 Pittsburgh Stories You May Have Missed

What's CITY Talking About?

💰 Pittsburgh Public Schools Passes 2025 Budget

The PPS board voted 8-1 to approve a budget over $750 million, which includes a substantial deficit. Board members blamed a 2000s-era city policy for the part of the problem. Projections show the district could use up its reserves by 2027, which is one reason why they’re considering school closures after the 2024-25 school year. [90.5 WESA / 🎧 City Cast Pittsburgh]

  • 🚌 The board also ratified union contracts that remove the requirement for paraprofessional, technical, and clerical employees to live in the city.

🏘️ City Council Moves Forward Rival Zoning Bill

The Pittsburgh Planning Commission is currently considering a proposal from Mayor Ed Gainey that would expand inclusionary zoning citywide. (Right now, the policy — which requires developers to make a certain number of units in their buildings affordable — is only in place in some neighborhoods.) Now, City Council is sending the commission a different bill to consider, which would allow each neighborhood to decide whether to apply the zoning rules. [90.5 WESA]

We love to update yinz about the yummiest new places to grab a bite or bev in the Burgh — and the places you’ll soon miss! Check out what caught our eye this week 🤤

🥐 Mediterra No. 3 Opens in Seven Fields

Fans of coffee and local baked goodies have a new favorite spot north of the city. Look for all the classic Mediterra flavors like their decadent baked French toast (currently served with cinnamon apples!) and one of our all-time favorites — a lavender latte with oat milk.

🌶️ Latino Spot Bar & Buffet Opens in Oakland

A rotating buffet menu means that each visit brings new flavors. But if you’re just looking for a quick bite, try the empanadas or a Cuban sandwich. Plus, enjoy beer, cocktails, and imported juices like passion fruit, guava, and mango.

🚚 Farmer x Baker Makes a Move

The shipping container restaurant, known for its dreamy bagel sandwiches and refreshing homemade sodas, is moving from its location along the Allegheny RiverTrail Park in Aspinwall to a different riverfront spot (to be announced) — and owner Jen Urich is asking for your help to make it happen.

👋 These Restaurants Call It Quits

Unfortunately, not all of our local restaurants are making it into 2025. We’re sad to see them go, but some are hosting final parties to say goodbye. Mark your calendars for a final feast!

  • Redbeard’s in Mt. Washington closes Dec. 21
  • Luke and Mike's Frontporch in Aspinwall closes Dec. 28
  • Black Lotus Pizza in Bloomfield’s closes on Dec. 31
  • Cioppino and Osteria 2350 in the Strip District close Dec. 31
