🥕 Food Justice Orgs Are Finally Getting Funds

After a slow start, City Council is ready to give out its first round of awards from Pittsburgh’s $3 million Food Justice Fund. The money will help food access efforts by Grow Pittsburgh, the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, Jasmine Nyree Homes, and the Just Harvest Education Fund. While many are celebrating the announcement, there’s been some criticism that grassroots neighborhood groups weren’t included in the initial funding. [90.5 WESA]

Did you know the Terrible Towel has been to Mt. Everest and outer space? City Paper’s Colin Williams says the Wikipedia page for our city’s iconic piece of terrycloth does a “damn good job of breaking down precisely why Steelers commentating legend Myron Cope’s simple ‘gimmick’ has become such an enduring and often hilarious piece of Pittsburgh lore.” [City Paper]

Food & Drink News!

We love to update yinz about the yummiest new places to grab a bite or bev in the Burgh — and the places you’ll soon miss! Check out what caught our eye this week 🤤

🌮 Taqueria Acosta Pops Up at Fat Cat

Normally you can find this New Mexican-inspired cuisine at events around town, but now they have a semi-permanent pop-up at Fat Cat in East Allegheny. Stop in on a live music night and get tacos with your choice of red chile chicken or green chile pork — or pack in all the goodness with a “bowlacosta.”

🐕 The Dog Penn Serves Pups & People

Pups must be on their best behavior to roll over to this new full-service bar and off-leash “bark park” in the Strip District. Expect wine, beer, cocktails, and coffee, plus wifi and space for local food trucks. Drop in for a day or check out their monthly and yearly memberships.

🥞 Wunderbar Coffee House Is a Crepe Escape

The café founded in historic Harmony now has a Bellevue location. Along with their classic Wunderbar Mocha, look for savory, gluten-free crepes like portobello or chorizo and gourmet sandwiches like the brisket brioche or “fried jumbo” — thick cut bologna with cheddar, tomato, and a dippy egg on sourdough.

🍦 Sugar Spells Scoops To Close

The vegan ice cream biz in Sharpsburg will serve its last scoops at the end of this year. The crew said they weren’t able to come to an agreement with their landlord, but they hope to find a new location and continue serving dairy-free treats.
