🚗 12 essential driving rules in Pittsburgh

September 4, 2024 · — Francesca Dabecco

Isn’t driving here the worst?! Even back in the 1930s, famous newspaper guy Ernie Pyle called us the “cockeyedest city” in the U.S. and said that our roads “must have been laid out by a mountain goat.” 🐐 Has it really even changed?

To help you navigate, the City Cast Pittsburgh team is sharing essential rules for driving on our narrow, hilly streets and, of course, debating the efficacy of the Pittsburgh left ⬅️ 🚗

What's CITY Talking About?

💰 Highmark Health’s Revenue Is Up $1 Billion

Allegheny Health Network and Highmark Health insurance’s parent company reported $14.7 billion in revenue for the first half of the year (over $1 billion more than last year), as well as a $28 million net income increase year over year. FYI: Highmark President David Holmberg made $9.47 million in 2022. [TribLive]

  • 📉 UPMC reported a $313 million loss in the first six months of 2024 — even though it generated more revenue in the first half of 2024 than in 2023. [TribLive]
  • 💰 For context: UPMC’s former president and CEO Jeffrey Romoff made more than $17 million in 2022, a year after he retired. [Business Times]

  • 🚗 Prepare to pay: Similar to how regular drivers pay a gas tax, EV users will soon pay a new fee toward state highway and bridge maintenance. [🎧 City Cast Pittsburgh]

  • 🥕 What about vegetarians? I asked! They also plan to host plant-based nights. [📝 Hey Pittsburgh]

♿ Inside Pittsburgh’s ADA Transition Plan

For the first time in 32 years, Pittsburgh is getting an accessibility audit, plus a plan to make it better. Where Is It?

Let’s play a game! Where in Pittsburgh can you find this mural of a bride stepping onto her row house porch? 👀

🌟 Congrats to our lone winner this week, Mark H., who correctly guessed the last “Where Is It?” challenge!

This photo challenge was a tough one because the only person to guess was Mark Houser, who shouldn’t really count because he joined us on the City Cast Pittsburgh podcast to talk about this very spot — the Benedum-Trees Building!

This Downtown street was once a happening spot for Pittsburgh's financial district — and it all started because of commercial oil tapping 165 years ago.

There is so much to learn about our city’s iconic buildings 🏙️ Get a grand view with one of Houser's antique skyscraper tours Sept. 14-15 and Oct. 19-20.
