⛲ Point State Park turns 50!
August 30, 2024 · — Francesca Dabecco
It’s Labor Day weekend! Workers rights are kinda Pittsburgh’s thing, so be sure to celebrate those who fought for safer and more equitable working conditions with a day of rest. Reminder: We won’t publish on Monday.
✋ But before you clock out, scroll for an ode to our city’s centerpiece, our favorite frugal eats, and a few long weekend activities.

What's CITY Talking About?

⛲ Happy 50th Birthday to the Point!

- 🎢 It’s hard to imagine the confluence was once a meeting point for bridges, and way before that, a roller coaster! No, seriously! [Third Stop on the Right]
📣 More Museum Employees Unionize
The Frick Pittsburgh became the latest local museum to unionize under the United Steelworkers, joining workers at four Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh and the Children’s Museum. [90.5 WESA]
🌕 What Went Wrong with Peregrine?
Astrobotic’s lunar lander missed the moon in January because of a faulty valve in its propulsion system. Good news: engineers have a new design for the next lander, Griffin, which is planned to take off with Artemis in 2025. [TechCrunch]

You can go inside a World War II landing ship docked on Pittsburgh's North Shore today through Sept. 3. Tank (LST) 325 participated in the Normandy invasion at Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944. Tickets are $15 for adults, $7 for ages 6-17; Children 5 and under are free. [TribLive]

The Best $10 (and Under) Meals in Pittsburgh

The City Cast Pittsburgh team loves treats, but eating out can get expensive — so we set our sights on the best bites that won’t break the bank with a $10 budget, not including tax and tip. And we’re not talking about a single slice of pizza — we’ve got breakfast biscuits, sit-down dinners, and even sushi!
Wise County Cafe
📍Allegheny West
Their breakfast biscuits come in under $10, and newsletter editor Francesca Dabecco’s favorite is the Your Way Sandwich with a mushroom and oat patty. But if you prefer a simple biscuit, order one à la carte with your choice of spread.
No. 1 Sushi Sushi
📍Downtown
Thought you couldn’t get raw fish on a budget? Think again! The menu is extensive, and you can even order some of the chef’s specialty rolls for under $10. We love the Futo Maki, or consider a two-roll combo and the veggie lover’s roll.
Chicken Latino
📍Beechview
It’s hard to pass up fried plantains or a cup of horchata, but if you’re minding your wallet, the best deals are the enormous soft chicken burrito and the one-quarter chicken meal combo, which comes with two sides like fries, coleslaw, rice, or beans.

Let’s try again. Where can you find a pink mural featuring these two 20th century tycoons? 👀 Submit your guess!

I’m giving yinz until Tuesday to get your answers in 😉
