🎩 Pittsburgh's oily anniversary

August 27, 2024 · — Francesca Dabecco

Pittsburgh is known for a lot of things: steel and shale, eds and meds, bridges and ball games… but did you know that our city once had its very own “Wall Street” Downtown?

Today on the City Cast Pittsburgh podcast, we’re talking about how the financial district started with the region’s very first commercial oil tapping — 165 years ago today!

What's CITY Talking About?

🧪 Appalachian Hydrogen Hub Opens

The $925 million ARCH2 hub held its grand opening in Morgantown. It’s billed as a climate solution, since hydrogen emits zero carbon dioxide, but locals are discouraged by the lack of transparency. [Allegheny Front]

🦠 Links Between Covid & Climate Change

Covid cases are on the rise, and unfortunately for Allegheny County residents, respiratory viruses are worsened by poor air quality. Pitt’s Dr. Maureen Lichtveld is studying how our region is impacted by industry, warming temperatures, and airborne illnesses. [PublicSource]

🚧 Broad Street Revamp Begins

A $1.2 million refresh of the .3-acre plaza at Highland and Broad in East Liberty is underway. The new, fully-accessible square will include native, drought-resistant plants, moveable furniture, and space for small events and concerts. [NEXTpittsburgh]

📝 Renowned Poetry Event To Return

After a 15-year hiatus, there’s a new season of the International Poetry Forum in Pittsburgh, starting with a reading by founder Samuel Hazo, Pennsylvania’s first poet laureate, on Sept. 15 at the Carnegie Library Lecture Hall. [Pittsburgh Magazine]

Let’s play a game! Where can you find these two boys in their business casual? 👀

🌟 Congrats to Jason D., Eric S., Natalie T., Hallie T., Alyssa C., and Dan M. who correctly guessed the last “Where Is It?” challenge!

It’s all fun and free-throws in Allegheny Commons with the newly renovated basketball court known as “The Jungle,” which had its grand opening earlier this month. If you’re in the neighborhood, check out the collaboration between Hounds, Swish Dreams, and artist Janel Young.

Where do we go from here?

  • ➡️ Head right to dine out for date night or get a local gift in East Allegheny 🍽️ 🛍️
  • ⬅️ Or go left to Allegheny West, snag some biscuits, and visit my favorite book store 🍳 📚

I hope yinz are surviving this heat. 😅 Heads up! Most Pittsburgh pools are now only open on the weekends.

Here’s your reminder that ice cream season IS NOT OVER 🍦 Get a treat from these shops in the ‘burbs, grab a dairy-free cone at some of my recommended spots, or blend the seasons with Page’s fall flavors available on Sept. 8 🍁

And if you were sad about Dave & Andy’s closing, there’s good news: It’s reopening Sept. 7!

⛱️ Stay cool!
