August 23, 2024 · — Selena Seay-Reynolds

Hi! This is Selena Seay-Reynolds, a producer at City Cast, filling in for Francesca today. I just moved back to Pennsylvania from California and am very happy to be writing my first newsletter for you ✍️💌🌴

On the City Cast Pittsburgh podcast, we’re talking about Point State Park’s 50th birthday, Pennsylvanians at the RNC and DNC, and some local strike news. Take a listen!

What's CITY Talking About?

Penguins Promote Amanda Kessel

A familiar name got a big promotion with the Penguins’ minor league team. Amanda Kessel is an Olympic gold medalist and current player in the PWHL. Her brother, Phil Kessel, won back-to-back Stanley Cups with the men’s team in the 2010s. It’s not clear whether she’ll keep playing. [KDKA]

Blue Line Station Closures

Multiple light-rail stations on the Blue Line will be closed for maintenance over the next several weekends with the exception of Labor Day weekend. Check the schedule and plan accordingly. [Pittsburgh Regional Transit]

Bye Bye, Big Lots

The discount retail chain is shuttering 142 of its stores nationwide, including the Coraopolis location. But there are 19 other stores around the city and 73 across the state. [Business Times]

New Food & Drink

We love sharing Pittsburgh’s yummiest new places to grab a bite or beverage! Check out what's on our plate this week 👩‍🍳

🍕 Alberta’s Pizzeria

After seven years slinging wood-fried pies from a food truck, Alberta’s Pizzeria finally found a permanent home on Western Avenue in Allegheny West. Grab a seat at the bar or slide into a booth with friends to ‘salute’ with wine, share appetizers (highly recommend the fried zucchini frites!), and devour a perfectly crispy-yet-chewy slice of pizza.

☕ Colombino Coffee

The Colombian-sourced coffee and cacao vendor known for his kiosk in the Strip District has moved into the old Adda Coffee & Tea House in Allegheny West. Their signature Mocha and “drinking chocolate” look especially tasty, and they have lots of coffee-brewing tools and merch so you can keep the flavor brewing at home.

🌿 Wild Rosemary Bistro

Bring your own bottle of wine when you sit down to enjoy Chef Raymond Mikesell’s family recipes in Upper St. Clair. The menu is inspired by his Italian-Irish-American heritage and fresh, local ingredients. Don’t miss the upcoming Supper Club — featuring rotating, family-style meals — where you can break bread with neighbors.
