Penguin Chick Meets Pgh’s Penguins

Head coach Mike Sullivan of the Pittsburgh Penguins was introduced to Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium’s newest penguin chick, Hat Trick, aka Hatty. Sullivan says: “We love to visit … and see their personalities. Some remind me of a few of our Penguins players!” [Pittsburgh Zoo]

Working Conditions for Jail Correctional Officers

A survey of 194 correctional officers at Allegheny County Jail reported most respondents felt the working conditions — including chronic understaffing, forced overtime, demanding schedules, and a stark divide between staff and management — were affecting their health and creating an untenable working environment. U.S. Steel’s Christmas Eve Fire Settlement

The 2018 fire at Clairton Coke Works resulted in 102 days of illegal air pollution emissions. In a finalized agreement, facility owner U.S. Steel promised big payouts: $4.5 million toward environmental projects, a penalty to Allegheny Co.’s Clean Air Fund, and $19.5 million to proactively prevent pollution control systems breakdowns. [Allegheny County]

  • 🏭 Should U.S. Steel help pay for county regulators? The health department is proposing increased fees for emitters, from behemoths like U.S. Steel all the way down to local dry cleaners. The fees would cover, in part, a budget shortfall in the local office that oversees pollution permits. [Pittsburgh Business Times]

New Food & Drink

We love to update yinz about the newest places to grab a bite or bev in the Burgh! Check out what caught our eye this week 🤤

🥯 Curbside On The Run

Come to Fox Chapel’s Curbside for the breakfast sammies with house-made bang bang sauce, and then come back again, braving the high-energy rush hours, to try the seasonal smoothies with names like “Guavacado” or “Morning Commute” and to sample each month’s specialty lattes — July’s are pie themed.

🍣 KuJiRa Sushi & Bar

Imagine you want an all-you-can-eat sushi meal but you’re also conscious of food waste. The solution: the made-to-order Pacific Experience at KuJiRa Sushi & Bar. This Shadyside restaurant isn’t just for testing our sushi limits though, it also has the rolls and tempura plates for every palate, and Japanese soups you can tailor to your preferences.

🍪 Lincoln Bakery

Prantl’s purchasing this Bellevue staple hasn’t changed its menu much, and for that, we are grateful. The classic baked goodies — especially those cookie assortments! — are just as good as ever, and they remain at the perfect height for kiddos crowding close to the glass. And good news: this means Pittsburgh’s favorite burnt almond torte now has another home.

More Happy Hours, Pool Chaperones, and an Ice Cream Sweepstakes

It’s the Friday news roundup! The city and county are changing their pool policies in the middle of the summer — now, some kids need chaperones. There are fun new rules about happy hours and canned cocktails in the commonwealth. And a pair of Pittsburghers showed out on the national stage at the All-Star Game. Plus, stick around for National Ice Cream Day deals.

Before I go, a sweet reminder! Sunday is National Ice Cream Day, which is perfect because a cold treat is a perfect remedy for this heat. Bruster’s Real Ice Cream is offering a bunch of deals, including the chance to win free ice cream for the year.
