An assassination attempt in Western PA

July 15, 2024 · — Megan Harris

Hey neighbors. City Cast Pittsburgh host Megan Harris here.

At the start of this new week, I’m holding my loved ones and found family a little closer — and wishing for the millionth time that our region could exempt itself from the microscope of what it means to be part of a very public tragedy. We’re talking about Western PA’s role in the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump — as well as the Pennsylvanians who died or were hurt — on the City Cast Pittsburgh podcast today. I hope you’ll tune in 🖤

‘May His Memory Be a Blessing’

Gov. Josh Shapiro said these words again on a national stage Sunday when he shared the identity of the firefighter, father, and Trump supporter who was shot and killed at the rally in Butler County. Corey Comperatore recently turned 50, graduated from Freeport Area High School, and formerly served as chief of the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Department. [TribLive]

  • A fundraiser for the Comperatore family started with a goal of $7,000 – as I write this, it’s approaching $800,000. Another for all the victims is well over $3.4 million. [GoFundMe]
  • Two other people were injured at the rally: David Dutch, 57, of New Kensington, and James Copenhaver, 74, of Moon Township. Both are in stable condition, but state police say Dutch is in a medically induced coma. [TribLive]
  • The FBI identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. He was killed by the Secret Service. [TribLive]
  • Crooks was a registered Republican from Bethel Park. Officials say they think he acted alone. [90.5 WESA]
  • In a White House address, President Joe Biden counseled unity. "Politics must never be a literal battlefield," he said. "God forbid a killing field." [Associated Press]
  • The Republican National Convention begins today in Milwaukee. Trump has promised to attend. [CBS News]

PA Passes a State Budget

A few days past their deadline, the state legislature agreed on a $47.6-billion budget that includes a $12 million funding increase for Pittsburgh Regional Transit and a statewide school funding compromise — but not recreational cannabis. [Penn Capital-Star]

Window Washers Rescued Downtown

Two window washers were stuck on skyscraper scaffolding between the seventh and eighth floors of the BNY Mellon Building for over an hour Friday, due to a temporary power outage. Both made it to safety; neither was injured. [WPXI]

GAP Section Closed 'Til October

Officials closed a 2.5-mile stretch of the Great Allegheny Passage last week to make way for an underground pipeline replacement. Free shuttles to bypass mile marker 92 to 94.5 will run every 30 minutes — every day — between 7:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. until the pipeline is completed in mid-October. [GAP Conservancy]
