What's CITY Talking About?

Goodnight, Gus 🧡

Pittsburgh lost a local legend this weekend when August “Gus” Kalaris died. He was 92. His family says they’ll keep the popular ”Gus & YiaYia’s” ice ball stand open the rest of the summer — this marks its 90th year — and reevaluate over the winter. Kalaris was honored in 2021 with a miniature at the then-Carnegie Science Center’s Pittsburgh-themed railroad. [TribLIVE]

Pennsylvania’s Budget Blues

Pennsylvania is starting *another* fiscal year without a budget after failing to reach an agreement before today’s deadline. Gov. Shapiro’s proposed $48.3 billion budget, featuring a significant increase in funding for public schools, came in stark contrast to Republicans’ $3 billion tax cut plan. Until a budget passes, the state has $15 billion in the bank to honor its financial obligations. [Associated Press]
