Good morning, Pittsburgh! Today, I have a story about the biggest rodent in the country, trash talk, and the hunt for a perfect slice of pizza.

And I know I just asked you for summer activity recommendations like two days ago, but I’m not kidding when I tell you that I’m itching to get out of the house. So, as a certain Vermont senator would put it: I am once again asking you to share your Pittsburgh summer bucket list ideas.

Streamlined Littering Enforcement

Pittsburgh City Council is considering a proposed bill that would allow inspectors to issue on-site “quality-of-life” tickets for trash code violations like improper garbage storage and failure to separate recyclables. The current trash code requires repeat offenses and court appearances before fines can be issued. [90.5 WESA]

Juneteenth Event Feud Continues

More than two weeks after the City Council approved a $125,000 payment to William “B” Marshall for his annual Juneteenth celebration, the longtime organizer says he has yet to be paid. City officials cited a missing waiver in Marshall’s contract as the reason for delayed payment, but a resolution has not been reached. [TribLIVE]

East Palestine Could Have Been Prevented

The catastrophic train derailment that leaked hazardous chemicals in East Palestine, Ohio, in early 2023, was caused by an overheated wheel bearing that failed detection, according to a final incident report by the National Transportation Safety Board. The report included recommendations for stricter regulations and better detection technology. [WPXI]
