What's CITY Talking About?

Bipartisan Plan to Legalize Pot in PA

A Pittsburgh Democrat and a Luzerne County Republican are introducing a bill to legalize recreational cannabis in Pennsylvania. The lawmakers cited Ohio sales, which could begin as soon as this month, as part of the impetus, and say they plan to include a route to expungement as well. [90.5 WESA]

Juvenile Jail to Reopen in 2-3 Weeks

Shuman Juvenile Detention Center will reopen in phases, nearly three years after the state shut it down for repeated violations. The courts ordered extensive renovations, and the county awarded a five-year, $72 million contract to a new company, Adelphoi, to operate the facility. [KDKA-TV]

A Concert Seat for Your Office or Family Room

Do you have a favorite seat for concerts and other performances? Now you can own it. Carnegie of Homestead Music Hall is selling its vintage seats to make way for new floor seating. Three Brothers Bagels

With two decades of experience in New York and Pittsburgh restaurants, co-owner and head baker Colin Whiddon is focusing his expertise on bagels. In March 2020, he developed a bagel recipe using his sourdough starter. Following great success with their online ordering, Three Brothers Bagels opened a store in Glenshaw last August featuring 14 different flavors, including wildcards like cheddar jalapeno and French toast. Don’t sleep on the sandwiches!

StuntPig

The “pig rig,” aka food truck, is being parked, and the folks who dish out those delectable sandwiches and more are finally settling down. A new brick-and-mortar StuntPig restaurant opens its doors Thursday, June 27 at 1707 Murray Ave. in Squirrel Hill with all the fixings, including its celebrated cut, cured, and smoked meats — plus veggie options! Look for them Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays as they gradually expand to five days a week.

Senza

Senza Bakeshop and Cafe is the brainchild of former Bar Marco chef Jessie Manowski and her husband, Matthew. They opened their intimate cafe in Etna earlier this year. Senza means “without” in Italian, and according to the owners, they’re creating a restaurant without boundaries for their menu. While their eclectic offerings are subject to Jessie’s creative whims, Senza’s delicious pastries are a constant. Senza is open Fridays from 12 to 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Curbside Coffeehouse

Stop in this gem in Blawnox for a relaxing coffee and a tasty treat. Curbside’s coffee beans and espresso are all locally sourced, and they bake on site. Grab a meal and consider the salad sandwich with fire-roasted vegetables, pesto aioli, tomato, and spinach or the turkey club with maple bacon.

Heatwaves, Haunted Houses, and a Cannabis Update

Even though it’s been over 90 degrees every day this week, only a fraction of the city’s water fountains are on, and we’re blown away by the reason. ScareHouse, one of Pittsburgh’s most beloved fall attractions, isn't opening this year, and producer Sophia Lo isn’t likely to try their more hands-on alternative. Plus, we’ve got the latest on an upcoming groundbreaking at the new Tree of Life space in Squirrel Hill.
