🏠 How to resolve landlord disputes

June 5, 2024 · — Kevin Gavin

Good morning Pittsburgh! One of my favorite summer traditions is underway. The Three Rivers Arts Festival, the year’s largest celebration of artistic creativity, continues Downtown through June 9. So far, we’ve avoided another tradition — rain — dampening the spirits of festival-goers. But now I’m looking at the forecast… I hope I didn’t jinx it.

Development Sparks Gentrification Concerns

Empty storefronts on a stretch of East Ohio Street will likely be replaced with a farm-to-table restaurant, a Filipino restaurant, a wine bar, and a gelato store within the next two years to further develop a new "restaurant row." The former board president of the nonprofit Northside Leadership Conference criticized the organization for paying $839,000 for several buildings and then selling them to a private developer for $50,000. She’s worried that new stores and eateries will price out working-class North Siders. The developer said he didn’t want the properties to go to slumlords and this plan will be good for the community. Activists Break Camp at Pitt

Activists ended two days of protests early Tuesday morning and left their makeshift encampment outside the University of Pittsburgh’s Cathedral of Learning. Pittsburgh Police Chief Larry Scirotto says protesters came to a “peaceful" resolution after meeting with Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey and university leaders. It was unclear whether Chancellor Joan Gabel spoke with the activists. Scirotto said there were no additional arrests Monday night or Tuesday. [WTAE-TV]

Shelter Fire Displaces Nearly 200

A smoky fire Tuesday afternoon forced an evacuation from Second Avenue Commons. Four firefighters were injured; three were taken to the hospital, but officials say none of the injuries appeared to be serious. Residents were taken to the David L. Lawrence Convention Center while the County Department of Human Services looks for other accommodations. [Patch]

Pittsburgh’s Dueling Juneteenth Celebrations, Explained

For years now, there’s been a Juneteenth celebration in Pittsburgh – marking the date when the last enslaved people in this country finally learned that they were free. But this year, the city is also holding its own event. City Council is expected to cast another vote today toward funding both celebrations. Julia Felton, city hall reporter for TribLive, has been following the whole back and forth and joins us to explain.
