📣 Pro-Palestine encampment returns to Pitt
June 4, 2024 · — Kevin Gavin
Good news! Fifteen city swimming pools are opening June 15, including a new-and-improved Bloomfield Beach. Not on the list for 2024 were Homewood, Ream, and Sheraden, all due to maintenance issues.
How might accessibility change your perception of the pools? Hear about our new and old favorites. [🎧 City Cast Pittsburgh]

What's CITY Talking About?

Police Monitoring Encampment at Pitt
Pro-Palestinian activists put up tents Sunday outside the Cathedral of Learning on the University of Pittsburgh’s Oakland campus and erected a fence and wooden barricade. The protesters took to social media to outline their reasons, including divesting from companies that profit from Israel. The university said one person, not associated with Pitt, was arrested. [KDKA-TV]
Opioid Settlement Dollars Funding Coroners
At least three counties, including Lawrence in the Pittsburgh area, want to use some of their share of the money from opioid lawsuits to help fund their coroners’ offices. In 2021, then-Attorney General Josh Shapiro negotiated the $1 billion settlement and said he wanted the funds to be used to expand life-saving treatments. A state board will have the final say. Revamped Mail-In Ballot Envelope Problems
State election officials say a revised outer envelope for mail-in ballots during April’s primary led to fewer votes being rejected overall but caused a new problem. Since Pennsylvania expanded vote by mail in 2020, counties rejected thousands of ballots, many for missing a signature or date on the outer envelope. This time around the return envelope was printed with “20__,” and some voters forgot to fill in the last two digits of the year. [Votebeat]

What to Do Before, During & After a Tornado in Pittsburgh

The 2024 tornado season has been the most active in U.S. history, and Pittsburgh is well into a record-breaking year.
According to the National Weather Service, more than 800 tornadoes have been reported nationwide. April alone saw at least 300 tornadoes, the second-highest since 2011. Despite these numbers, there’s some possible relief: AccuWeather predicts fewer overall tornadoes in 2024 than in 2023.
But tornado behavior is changing, which experts say could have major consequences. The most destructive tornadoes are shifting east, such as in Illinois and Pennsylvania, and further south like in Tennessee.
