What's CITY Talking About?

Celebrity Pathologist Cyril Wecht Dies at 93
For most of the nation, Dr. Wecht was a biting and sometimes controversial critic and consultant on high-profile criminal cases, including the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the deaths of Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, and JonBenet Ramsey, and the murder trial of O.J. Simpson. But here in Pittsburgh, he was our county medical examiner, a county commissioner, and an assistant district attorney. In 2009, he told the AP he hoped to age with his mind and memory intact, and in fact, to live as long as possible. “I’d like to have it go on forever,” he said. [Associated Press]
Two Overnight Bridge Closures This Week
Drivers beware, you may need to adjust your routes for the next few days. The Fort Duquesne Bridge will have lane restrictions on its southbound lower deck from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. through May 16 due to inspection work. The Smithfield Street Bridge will also be closed from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. for concrete and overhead steel repairs. [KDKA-TV]
Earning Up to $58K? You May Soon Collect Overtime
A new rule from the U.S. Department of Labor will allow salaried employees who earn up to $58,656 a year to collect overtime pay for work exceeding 40 hours a week. This change is expected to benefit an estimated 4 million workers across the U.S. who fall under the “white collar exemption,” where they earn low wages but in salaried positions that are typically not eligible for overtime pay. While the median earnings in Pittsburgh are $60,084 a year, the median salary for women is just $52,758. [90.5 WESA]

Where Is It?

The “You Matter” mural is at the corner of North Canal and 13th Street in Sharpsburg. Artist Christian "Mad Rabbit" Miller created the mural for the Positive Painting Project to encourage and facilitate positive conversations around mental health. The project was created to honor Katie Whysong, the daughter of project founders Alisa and Todd Whysong.
