Construction Site Faced Violations Prior to Fatal Accident
Aleia Lopez, an employee from UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital, died on Friday when she was struck by a steel cylinder that rolled away from an Oakland construction site. Lopez, 51, was walking with coworkers at the time. According to OSHA records, the three companies involved at the site had previous safety problems; Costa Contracting was fined last year because employees at another construction site “were not protected from excavated or other materials or equipment that could pose a hazard by falling or rolling into excavations.” [TribLIVE]
Former Pittsburgh First Lady Judy O’Connor Dies
Judy Levine O’Connor, wife of former Mayor Bob O’Connor and mother of County Controller Corey O’Connor, died Friday at 79. Originally from Squirrel Hill, O’Connor worked at the Highmark Caring Foundation’s Caring Place and volunteered for Meals on Wheels and the Mario Lemieux Children’s Home. “She really had a love for the underdog,” her son Rev. Terrence O’Connor says. [TribLIVE]
Penguin Passes, Eaglet Names & Groundhog Babies
What’s new with Pittsburgh critters? The National Aviary is mourning the loss of its first African penguin, Stanley, who was 20 years old. His keepers even tried acupuncture to help him toward the end. Thanks to an online contest, the eaglet that’s nesting near the U. S. Steel’s Irvin plant has a new name: Lucky. And if you want to help decide the names of some new fuzzy pups, the Groundhog Club in Punxsutawney is taking suggestions for Phil and Phyllis' twins. [KDKA / Pittsburgh Union Progress]

Not far from the Warhol Museum on the North Side, you can find this pop-artist portrait by Mt. Lebanon artist Ashley Hodder on East Ohio Street. The cosmic colors and design are inspired by the “Silver Clouds” exhibit at the Andy Warhol Museum.
🎉 The Warhol Museum is celebrating its 30th anniversary this month! There’s a vast collection at the museum, but you’re probably most familiar with the soup can art. Learn about Warhol’s soup-er success in this episode from our archives!
