What's CITY Talking About?

Pro-Palestinian Protesters Arrested at Pitt

Two people were arrested Sunday night during a demonstration of about 200 people outside the University of Pittsburgh’s student union. Organized by the “Pitt Divest from Apartheid” student group, the demonstration began as an encampment at Schenley Plaza in Oakland last Tuesday. According to a university spokesperson, arrests were made because officials had asked protesters to move the encampment off campus grounds. Commencement ceremonies also took place Sunday. [TribLive]

Women’s Pro Soccer Coming to Pittsburgh

The men’s Pittsburgh Riverhounds soccer team made the special announcement at a game over the weekend. The women’s soccer team will play in the USL W, which refers to itself as a pre-professional league. We can expect to see them play in 2025, and announcements about their official name and crest in the coming months. [WTAE]

New Doula Program for People of Color

Black women in the U.S. are three times more likely to die during pregnancy than white women, and the Pennsylvania Black Maternal Health Caucus has been sounding the alarm. In addition to the proposed PA Momnibus, the Pennsylvania Doula Commission’s new Doula Equity Program is giving $1,500 to 25 expecting families for doula services, which are not typically covered by insurance. You must be Black, Indigenous, or a person of color. [90.5 WESA]

Cicada Myths, Free Museum Tix & A Kennywood Lawsuit

Kennywood is open, and it might be in legal trouble. We’re digging into the new lawsuit from a disgruntled season passholder. Host Megan Harris explains why we don’t need to worry about trillions of cicadas – or their zombies – in our area, but we do need to watch for lanternflies. Plus, producer Sophia Lo shares fun new ways to enjoy a bunch of shows and museums for free all summer long.

Thanks for hanging out with me! Let’s do this again tomorrow 🤗
