What's CITY Talking About?

Pittsburgh Public Sues Allegheny County

Pittsburgh Public Schools officially filed a lawsuit seeking a countywide property reassessment. The move comes one month after the school board voted unanimously to authorize legal action. Why? The county assigns tax values to properties — which influence the amount of funding the school district receives — but hasn’t conducted a countywide tax reassessment in more than a decade. District solicitor Ira Weiss says this has “created a situation where the lower valued properties are over-assessed, and higher valued properties are under-assessed.” [PublicSource]

Post-Gazette Settles Strike With Teamsters

After an 18-month long strike, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette settled with Teamsters Local 211/205, the union representing the paper’s truck drivers. The union voted to accept a severance pay and dissolve itself, but details on the payout have not been finalized. The Pittsburgh Newspaper Guild — representing reporters, photographers, and other editorial personnel — is still on strike, along with three other unions representing mailers, advertising workers, and press personnel.

  • 📣 The other unions on strike didn’t know this was coming; the Teamsters negotiated in secret by request of the Post-Gazette. Some union representatives worry this damages the credibility of the Teamsters and puts the possibility of a fair settlement for others at risk. [WESA]
