April 10, 2024

Good morning, neighbor! If you followed our guide to April, you know that it’s library week 📚 Check out Pittsburgh author Shannon Reed’s book, “Why We Read: On Bookworms, Libraries and Just One More Page Before Lights Out.”

👀 And if you missed it, here are some fun free things to get with your library card!

What's CITY Talking About?

Heads Up: Construction in the Strip

After months of delays, construction has begun on a stretch of Smallman Street that’s expected to last for a year. The street is closed in both directions between 29th and 30th streets. [KDKA-TV]

  • 🚧 But wait! There’s more! We’re sharing everything you need to know about upcoming PennDot projects. [🎧 City Cast Pittsburgh]

New Rules for the Jail Oversight Board

A new sense of order could come to the previously dysfunctional Allegheny County Jail Oversight Board as the body established a new set of bylaws last week. The new operating rules come after a few other changes earlier this year: County Executive Sara Innamorato’s spot on the nine-member board, two new judges, and three new citizen members. The board, however, did not agree on an amendment that would have prohibited the county executive, controller, and sheriff from sending stand-ins to monthly meetings. [90.5 WESA]

$1B Expansion of AGH

Allegheny General Hospital on the North Side will expand with a new cardiovascular tower and emergency department; Allegheny Health Network is already working on a Neuroscience Institute at the corner of Hemlock and James streets.

  • 🏥 UPMC also has big projects in the works, such as a $1.5 billion, 17-story hospital tower in Oakland and a three-story Heart Institute at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. [TribLIVE]

Norfolk Southern Will Pay $600M

Norfolk Southern agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit after the train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, about an hour's drive northwest of Pittsburgh. If approved by the court, the $600 million agreement will resolve all class action claims within a 20-mile radius of the derailment and personal injury claims within a 10-mile radius of the derailment.
