April 9, 2024

🌚 Hey friend! Did you watch the eclipse yesterday?! Hopefully, you were able to catch a glimpse through those clouds. (Our very own Mallory Falk caught that gorgeous shot below.)

If you couldn’t view the eclipse in real-time, check out NASA’s video of the eclipse’s path.

What's CITY Talking About?

City Appeals Reinstatement of Officer in Tasing Case

The City of Pittsburgh is appealing the reinstatement of the police officer who repeatedly shocked Jim Rogers with a Taser in 2021. Keith Edmonds shocked Rogers at least 10 times while responding to a report of a stolen bicycle in Bloomfield; Rogers died the next day and the city later fired Edmonds. He was reinstated last month after an arbiter ruled that there was not enough evidence to justify his termination. In the appeal, an attorney for the city wrote that the decision should be “rejected as a gross mischaracterization, obfuscation and abandonment of law.” [TribLIVE]

Millvale Library’s Tool-Lending Program Expands

A new grant will allow the Millvale Community Library to expand its popular tool lending program, where patrons can borrow everything from cordless drills to tile-cutting saws. The $227,230 grant from the Allegheny Regional Asset District will fund a new structure to house the collection in the library’s backyard, creating a safer and more accessible way to access over 1,000 tools. Construction is expected to begin at the start of summer. [Pittsburgh Union Progress]

CMU Gets Greenlight for New Science Hall, Restaurant, and Museum

Pittsburgh’s planning commission approved a $252 million construction project at the corner of Craig Street and Forbes Avenue. The university will build a 345,000-square-foot science hall with a seven-story tower for labs, offices, and other learning spaces. The building will also include a restaurant, an art museum, and a public plaza. Officials hope to finish construction by 2027. [TribLIVE]

Why Pgh Was Named Roller Coaster Capital of the World

Kennywood opens for the season on April 20th. To celebrate, we’re revisiting highlights from our conversation with local historian Mark Houser ahead of the amusement park’s 125th birthday last year. Hear how Kenny’s Grove became our beloved Kennywood, how its stewards tow the line between preservation and modernization, and which rides helped usher in a new wave of amusement park shenanigans.

🌙 Eid Mubarak and a Happy Eid to everyone celebrating Eid al-Fitr tomorrow!
