🐧 How did 19,000 Jagr bobbleheads get stolen?

April 3, 2024

Good morning, neighbor! What kind of Pittsburghers would we be if we didn’t give you the low dahn on the viral Pittsburgh Penguins bobblehead heist? Get a grip on the story in today’s newsletter. Plus, I’m going into more detail on the City Cast Pittsburgh podcast 🚚 🚨🐧

What's CITY Talking About?

What Happened to Those Jagr Bobbleheads?

Remember the shipment of 19,000 Jaromir Jagr bobbleheads that went missing in California? The heist — which mobilized a response from the FBI and L.A. County Sheriff’s Department — became a viral story, calling attention to the rising problem of cargo theft. [Hey Pittsburgh / Forbes]

  • 🚚 How did it happen? On March 11, the thieves provided false paperwork and took off with the bobbleheads. Nearly a week-long saga ensued with various touchpoints with the “extortionists” and false positives. [🔒The Athletic]
  • 🐧 Happy ending! The bobbleheads were finally found, and fans who were supposed to receive a little #68 can redeem one with a voucher.

New Sidewalks Coming To Larimer, Hill District

A more than $700,000 state grant will allow Pittsburgh to put in new sidewalks on portions of Larimer Avenue in Larimer and Herron Avenue in the Hill District over the next two years. In a release, Mayor Ed Gainey said that “sidewalks are a basic building block of healthy and thriving neighborhoods.” [Pittsburgh Union Progress]

New Book Celebrates ‘Jazz in the Hill’

Remember the Pittsburgh-based band Rusted Root and their hit song, “Send Me On My Way”? Former band member Colter Harper wrote “Jazz in the Hill,” a book that shares Hill District jazz history from the 1920s to the 1970s. Go back in time with scenes of venues like the Crawford Grill and Hurricane Bar & Grill, learn how jazz was closely tied to the working class community, and Black Pittsburgh’s greatest contributions to the genre.
