📣 It’s pronounced Car-NAY-gie!
March 20, 2024
It’s our favorite neighbor’s birthday today! 🎉 Fred Rogers once said: “Imagine what our neighborhoods would be like if each of us offered, as a matter of course, just one kind word to another person.” Embody that message today, readers!
To celebrate, here are four fun facts about Mister Rogers’ sweaters ❤️

What's CITY Talking About?
Why Are Voter Registrations Being Challenged?
Nearly 16,000 Allegheny County residents have had their voter registrations challenged, even though many of them still live here. Why? An informal group of Republican activists are aiming to remove names from voter rolls — even though officials from both parties say their efforts are misguided. These challenges won’t remove any names before the presidential election, “but some observers say it could fuel bad-faith election fraud claims during a General Election that’s expected to be rife with misinformation.” [Public Source / 90.5 WESA]
- 🗳️ How did this get started, anyway? And what can you do if it happens to you? Reporters from PublicSource and 90.5 WESA tell us on today’s podcast. [🎧 City Cast Pittsburgh]
Fet-Fisk To Open This Month
Maybe you’ve heard of Fet-Fisk, a Pittsburgh pop-up restaurant that serves family-style Nordic meals. And if you’ve been lucky enough, maybe you even got a seat at one of chef Nik Forsberg’s sold out dinners. But now, after five years of pop-ups, you can finally snag a guaranteed spot! On March 28, Fet-Fisk will open a sit-down restaurant and bar in the former Lombardozzi’s in Bloomfield. [NEXTpittsburgh]
- 🍽️ Sound familiar? We talked to chef Nik Forsberg on the podcast after he was recognized as a James Beard Award semifinalist in 2023. [🎧 City Cast Pittsburgh]
Former Penguin Kolstov Dies
Former Penguins forward Konstantin Koltsov died at the age of 42. During his three seasons with the Penguins in the early 2000s, he played alongside both Sidney Crosby and Mario Limeux and was known for his swift skating. [TribLIVE]

Get To Know Carnegie Borough

The borough of Carnegie, located southwest of Pittsburgh, was incorporated in March 1894 and named after the industrialist-turned-philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. He wasn’t from the area, but the borough is the home of one of the greatest shortstops of all time, Pirates player Johannes Peter "Honus" Wagner, aka "the Flying Dutchman.” This year, the Historical Society of Carnegie celebrated the 150th birthday of this local legend.

Eat & Drink
First, coffee: Carnegie Coffee Company is located inside an old post office and is filled with cozy corners to enjoy breakfast, lunch, and pastries. They also have a little market section with local goodies and an upstairs area for private events.
Lunch, dinner & drinks: Grab a quick bite at Slice on Broadway; sit down for Irish fare & happy hour at the neighborhood mainstay Riley’s Pour House; get my favorite bibimbap dish at Seoul Korean BBQ; or order a glass of wine and twirl some pasta at LeoGreta.
Dessert: Satisfy your sweet tooth at Scoops in Carnegie or with cookies, cakes, pastries, and custom orders at The Bakery and Dessert Bar at LeoGreta.

Shop Local
If you want to show someone you care, stop by the stationery shop More Than Words. I had so much fun browsing the greeting cards and Pittsburgh goodies, including mugs and stickers reading, “Say it with me: Car-NAY-gie.”

Meet the Man Trying To Stop Nonexistent Voter Fraud
For a little over a year now, an informal group of Republican activists has been challenging our local voter rolls. They’ve filed thousands of challenges — all alleging that because someone moved, that means that they should be wiped from the Allegheny County voter logs. But the thing is, the county already takes care of that. Today, we’re talking to reporters Julia Zenkevich and Charlie Wolfson about how all this got started, what officials are saying about it, and what you can do as a voter to protect your vote if one of these letters comes your way.
