🚧 Mon Incline can’t keep it up

March 8, 2024

Happy International Women’s Day! Here's how to celebrate Women’s History Month in Pittsburgh. And if you’d like to support women in journalism, we’d love to have you as a member! 💛🎙️📝

💐 By the way, there’s a Women’s Day floral pop-up at my favorite Commonplace Coffee in the Mexican War Streets!

Carnegie Library Extends Hours

Starting this Sunday, most branches of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will stay open until 8 p.m. at least three nights a week, adding 93 hours of service per week system-wide. Allegheny, Brookline, East Liberty, Squirrel Hill, and the main branch in Oakland will all stay open until 8 p.m., four nights per week. [90.5 WESA]

Lawrenceville Scoffs At New Starbucks

Milhaus, the developer of the apartment and retail space Arsenal 201, announced that Starbucks will be a tenant. Lawreneceville United calls it a "direct violation of commitments” to the community and is urging locals to make their voices heard and support local cafes. [Pittsburgh City Paper]

Mon Incline Can’t Keep It Up

I feel like I tell you about the Monongahela Incline closing at least once a month! The 154-year-old incline shut down Tuesday after a brake resistor and motor controller failed; it will be closed for the rest of the week. The Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry will inspect it before it runs again. This is the fifth time the funicular has closed in the past year. [TribLIVE]

Pittsburgh likes to claim it has one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the country. It doesn’t surprise me! About 16% of Pittsburghers identify as Irish American, and we are right behind Boston for cities with the largest Irish populations.

So whether you want to rally for the parade Downtown, bar crawl on the South Side, or dine on Irish classics, you’re in luck. Find good eats and festivities below.

Kegs & Eggs, Plus Downtown Specials

If you need some fuel for parade-watching Downtown, get this St. Paddy's brunch from The Commoner: Guinness-glazed corned brisket hash topped with a fried egg and served with a selection of Irish beverages and green beer. City Works also has a $25 kegs & eggs buffet with $5 green beers.

And all day on March 16, Ritual House will serve pub-style braised corn beef, cabbage and red potatoes, bangers and bash with caramelized onion, Jameson gravy, and sweet peas.

Don’t sleep on their desserts! Pastry chef Zoe Peckich won a Food Network show last year. Try the Baileys mint chocolate chip milkshake with whipped cream, golden coins, clover sprinkles, a rainbow lollipop, and a cherry on top!

Comforting Irish Classics

If you have a taste for Irish eats like bangers and mash, shepherd’s pie, or corn beef and cabbage, you can get them year-round at Piper’s Pub on the South Side, Riley’s Pour House in Carnegie, Mullaney’s Harp & Fiddle in the Strip District, McFadden’s on the North Shore, or Monterey Pub in the Mexican War Streets on the North Side.

Don’t do meat? The shepherdless pie from Piper’s Pub is vegan but still has all of the comforting flavors!

City Cats, When To Call 311 & Wins for Monroeville and the South Hills

The Monroeville Convention Center won’t be turned into a Hobby Lobby after all, Pittsburgh is partially resuming its spay and neuter program, and Allegheny County Council voted against a ceasefire resolution this week. Plus, we’re talking about Vision Zero and how you can participate in 311 Day in Pittsburgh.

Don’t forget! It’s daylight saving time this weekend. ☀️

Have a great one!
