What's CITY Talking About?

Boomers Own Most Pittsburgh Houses

In a Redfin real estate report, Pittsburgh ranked number one for the city with the highest percentage of large houses owned by Boomers without children living at home. Thirty-two percent of houses are owned by those born from 1946 to 1964, while 13% are owned by Millennials (born between 1981 and 1996) with children. This means that there aren’t a lot of options for growing families. [Pittsburgh City Paper]

PPS Board Tables Citations for Students

The Pittsburgh Public School board considered lifting a nine-month moratorium on issuing low-level criminal offenses to students, but instead decided to postpone the policy proposal. The proposed policy outlined how police would work with principals to issue summary citations, but it didn’t change procedures to address the fact that Black students, specifically Black girls, are given these citations at disproportionate rates. Before it was a full-month celebration, there was Women’s History Week. In 1978, a group of women in Santa Rosa, California, recognized that women’s history was largely overlooked in academics, so they organized a week in March to celebrate and educate others about women’s contributions in the U.S.

During the week of March 8, more than a hundred women participated in essay contests, distributed curriculum materials at local schools, and held a parade. The event's success inspired women’s groups throughout the country to hold similar events.

In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation declaring the week of March 8 to be National Women’s History Week. Seven years later, Congress designated March as Women’s History Month.

This year’s theme is “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.” Here are some ways to honor women this month.

Why Boomers Dominate Pittsburgh Housing

We love when Pittsburgh is first at something — but not this. A Redfin study says we have the highest percentage of large houses owned by Baby Boomers without children living at home, making it tough for Millennials to find homes to accommodate their growing families. But is it actually Boomers’ fault? We’re digging into the local market with journalist Matt Petras, who covered the trend for Pittsburgh City Paper.

Have a great week,
