City Council Approves Gainey’s $6 Million Plan
Despite reservations from some members, Pittsburgh City Council approved Mayor Ed Gainey’s $6 million proposal to create a citywide comprehensive plan — a fresh vision he hopes will reshape zoning regulations, address racial and social inequities, and help to combat climate change. The city will hire a consulting group to carry out public meetings and get community feedback. [90.5 WESA]
Could Pittsburgh Host the NFL Draft?
In an interview on the City Cast Pittsburgh podcast, Mayor Gainey told us he wants to bring the NFL draft to Pittsburgh, and with it, some 300,000 people to the City of Champions. Now, we’re one step closer to making that happen. The city’s Stadium Authority voted unanimously to support the application for 2026 or 2027. [🎧 City Cast Pittsburgh / TribLIVE]
Spay & Neuter Program on Hold
Pittsburgh’s free spay and neuter program, which allows residents to get up to five pets spayed and neutered for free every year, has been put on pause. The city says some suburban residents were abusing the program by faking city addresses. Animal advocates say it couldn’t come at a worse time, as February is the start of breeding season for cats. It’s unclear when the program might resume. [TribLIVE]
