What's CITY Talking About?
Shapiro Pitches Legal Cannabis in PA Budget
Gov. Josh Shapiro’s $48.3 billion Pennsylvania spending proposal for 2024-25 pitches increased funding for public education through taxes on legalized cannabis and slot-like machines called skilled games. The budget, which draws on the state’s $14 billion in cash reserves, also includes funding for public transit, economic development, housing, and health care. The budget does not include taxpayer money for private school vouchers, a Republican priority that he previously supported. [SpotlightPA]
Station in Bloomfield Bids Farewell
After a 9-year run on Liberty Avenue, Chef Curtis Gamble is closing Station on February 16, followed by a closing party on February 17. Gamble is closing because he’s moving to Tennessee later this year. [Station]
Forever Chemicals Flow in Our Rivers
A report from Women for a Healthy Environment shows elevated levels of forever chemicals near local wastewater treatment plants, compared to lower levels upstream from the sites. Forever chemicals — or PFAS — are linked to cancer, poor reproductive health, child developmental issues, and other health problems. The study monitored the levels at Alcosan in Pittsburgh, McKeesport’s wastewater treatment plant, and the Allegheny Valley Joint Sewage Authority in Harmar. [TribLIVE]
- 🚰 The federal Clean Water Act does not limit PFAS in wastewater discharges, but it does have standards for drinking water. Pennsylvania introduced additional drinking water PFAS regulations in 2023. [The Allegheny Front]
