What's CITY Talking About?

What Pollutants Are In Pittsburgh’s Streams?

Most local water quality data is collected directly from the Ohio, Allegheny, and Monongahela rivers, but the Pittsburgh Water Collaboratory at the University of Pittsburgh examined the streams that feed into them. Their study found three dozen pollutants — like cadmium, a rare toxic metal from coke production — at 25 different tributaries and sewage outfalls. [90.5 WESA]

  • More than half of Allegheny County’s streams are in need of remediation, but the Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection doesn't currently have enough resources to clean them up.

New Series Celebrates LGBTQIA+ Community

WQED premiered a new, online series titled “Authentic Lives,” highlighting individuals whose work, careers, or everyday lives are leading to positive changes in our region’s LGBTQIA+ community, while also covering the challenges and discrimination the group faces. Watch it here. [WQED]

Former Froggy’s Site Could Be A Bocce Court

The Troiani Group wanted to tear down vacant buildings in Downtown to build an apartment and office tower, but City Planning blocked that plan. Now, the developer is proposing to tear down the three late-19th century buildings along First Avenue and Market Street to create four bocce courts. [PublicSource]
