What's CITY Talking About?

Two Months into Managing Pgh’s Deer Population

City officials report hunters have killed 64 deer in two Pittsburgh parks as part of a pilot program to reduce the deer population. The city’s handpicked team of bowhunters was allowed to start hunting deer in Frick and Riverview parks on Sept. 30. The pilot will conclude on Jan. 27, with a pause next month. Officials say the controlled deer hunt will inform the city’s efforts for a longer-term plan to manage deer populations. [90.5 WESA]

Proposed Legislation Could Bring Electricity, Water to Encampments

Legislation introduced in Pittsburgh City Council looks to allow water, electricity, and other amenities at encampments. City Council members Anthony Coghill and Deb Gross introduced a plan to amend the city’s zoning code to be able to regulate encampments. Potential services for the city’s unhoused population include garbage removal, lighting, showers, and bathrooms, along with potential mental health services and job placement assistance. Coghill says this is a stopgap measure that could lead to a more permanent solution. [TribLive]

More Traffic Calming Projects Coming in 2024

Pittsburgh’s Department of Mobility and Infrastructure plans to increase the number of traffic calming projects next year. DOMI will redesign some streets to slow vehicular traffic and make streets safer for all who use them. DOMI completed 15 such projects so far this year and is planning another 25 next year. The department will also be working on three major bridges and begin design and engineering work for 13 others. [90.5 WESA]

Gov. Shapiro Appealing Climate Program Decision

The governor’s administration is appealing a Commonwealth Court’s decision that halted PA’s effort to join the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, a multi-state program that aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the power sector. The administration is arguing this is a matter of executive authority. [The Allegheny Front; Department of Environmental Protection]

Bringing The ‘Hollywood’ Back to Life in Pgh

The Hollywood Theater in Dormont is back in business, temporarily. Developer Brian Mendelssohn is in the preview phase of a more than $1 million renovation of the oddly shaped, weirdly designed one-screen space, and he’s just getting started.

We joined him on Potomac Avenue to talk about what he learned from opening Row House in Lawrenceville, how the South Hills community has contributed to his dreams for the Hollywood, and all the fun treats he’s got in mind for its basement.

I just want to make Pittsburgh a more interesting place, and I just try to fill gaps in the city and make things that I wish were there.
Brian Mendelssohn, Developer

Wasn’t that great!? Let’s do it again tomorrow 🤗
